Baby girl name - Which of the two?

We’re Greeks living in the UK and we’re choosing between two baby names for our DD1 - Lily and Aliki. Both names work well in Greece, but which one do you think would fit better in the UK?

  • Lily is more international for Greeks but still valid and ok name.
  • Aliki is the Greek version of Alice.

We just don't want endless name spelling issues or mispelt names etc. hence we narrowed it down to an easy Greek name and a British/international one.

Lily is definitely the easier name. Aliki is gorgeous but will be constantly mis-pronounced (Ah-lick-ee or Ah-lee-kee or Ah-lie-kee?).

HalzTangz · 19/03/2026 12:05

I prefer Aliki but Lily is also a lovely name

I have a very common English name and it's mis pronounced pretty much daily 🤣

TartanCurtain · 19/03/2026 12:07

I would go with Aliki - it still offers the option for using Lily as a nn but has more links to your routes (and Lily is very common so might be nice to have something less usual in your back pocket so to speak)

Calliopespa · 19/03/2026 12:14

I think Lily is definitely more familiar to UK ears.

Yep. All the more reason not to give your child a name that very few people in the country you live in will EVER get right! I have lived in several countries and speak a bit of several languages and am not sure how to stress Aliki…..

lululu99 · 19/03/2026 12:22

There are tons of Lilys. Go with Aliki, it’s lovely!

MerryGuide · 19/03/2026 12:23

Aliki is definitely more interesting! Does it sound like "leaky" through or is the pronunciation different?

NamingNoNames · 19/03/2026 12:29

Aliki but be prepared for misspellings and mispronunciations.

Silverbirchleaf · 19/03/2026 12:35

Lily is known to the British. Never heard of Aliki before. I automatically pronounced as Ah - Lick - Kee , not sure if that’s right, and you may spend a lifetime of telling people how it’s spelt . If it’s like Alice , is it A - Lice-See?

maddiemookins16mum · 19/03/2026 12:41

Aliki is great but forever and a day people will get it wrong.

It's Al-EE-kih

Glitterbiscuits · 19/03/2026 12:53

Lily, It’s a classic for a reason. And a lovely name.

Eleos · 19/03/2026 12:58

Aliki will be mispronounced in the UK. Lily is really common so won't be.

If you are both Greek then you have a much much bigger pool to choose from!

So many beautiful girls Greek names out there, that readily lend themselves to UK culture and pronunciation. Unless, you are honouring your mothers', in which case, Aliki. Kiki is a cute nm too.

I don't think it's classic.

MJFEB2026 · 19/03/2026 14:50

Aliki!
Lily is boring!

SuperMarioToadPrincessPeach · 19/03/2026 15:12

There are tons of Lilys. Not sure I’m keen on Aliki but it’s more interesting then Lily.

user2848502016 · 19/03/2026 15:18

I think Aliki is lovely, I would choose that

steppemum · 19/03/2026 15:26

Lily is very well known in the UK and very familiar. Aliki is completely unknown.
But Lily is also pretty popular and so actaully a bit ordinary and boring.

Aliki is so pretty, really reflects the greek heritage much more unusual. And honestly more than half the class have names which have unfamiliar spellings and pronunciations and nowadays people just get on with it.

Villanousvillans · 19/03/2026 15:29

Lily. I fear she would constantly have to spell the other name.

Westfacing · 19/03/2026 15:36

There are so many Lily's in the UK - what about Iris if you want to stay with a flower and Greek theme

I don't like the 'sound' of Aliki - sticking with A what about Athena

I have no idea how Iris and Athena as names fit into modern-day Greek society - just my thoughts!

Olderbutt · 19/03/2026 15:39

Athena.......Anastasia?

ChocolateCinderToffee · 19/03/2026 21:55

Aliki.

I like Lily too, but there are a lot of them around.

sharkstale · 19/03/2026 21:57

Lily

Kingkingkong · 19/03/2026 22:01

Lily is lovely but I prefer Aliki given your background!

We are a Greek/British family and our girls name shortlist included Eleni, Irini and Petra.
