Is Oliver Sage too hippy and/or redundant? (Since Olive and Sage are both shades of green/plants?) I love it so much but don’t want my boy to grow up finding it weird as an adult

I think Oliver is a commonly used name and I doubt many people will think it has anything to do with the colour green.

Is Sage a suggestion as a middle name or is that your surname?

If it is a middle name, they only tend to get used in the birth announcement, any potential graduations, weddings, and funerals, so I wouldn't worry so much about it, although it certainly isn't to my taste (as a middle name - obviously 'it is what it is' if that is your surname).

Topseyt123 · 02/03/2026 17:21

I love Oliver but would drop the Sage idea.

ItalianChineseIndianMexican · 02/03/2026 17:41

The only Sage I know is female but if you like it, go for it.

17caterpillars1mouse · 02/03/2026 17:42

Oliver is in no way hippy. Sage is more out there but as a middle name it wont be used much and its still pretty conservative so i wouldnt worry

AudiobookListener · 02/03/2026 17:48

Sage also means a profoundly wise person. Might become a burden if he turns out to be, well, not sage!

lottiegarbanzo · 02/03/2026 18:26

I would never connect Oliver with Olive. Despite the spelling they’re very different names.

Viviennemary · 02/03/2026 18:28

Oliver is fine. But Sage shouldn't be paired with it. Sounds a bit daft tbh.

Comedycook · 02/03/2026 18:36

I quite like it

Comedycook · 02/03/2026 18:36

I quite like it

Mosman2020 · 02/03/2026 18:37

No

Translatethedog · 02/03/2026 18:38

I like it.

Oliver isn’t hippy though if that’s the aim.

DecoratingDiva · 02/03/2026 19:02

Unless you are hyphenating his name to Oliver-Sage then why not? Middle names are rarely used.
I would assume Sage is female if I saw it by itself but I would never associate Oliver with the colour green.

ComtesseDeSpair · 02/03/2026 19:14

Outwith the context of a Farrow and Ball paint chart, I don’t really think of green when I hear either Olive or Sage. Oliver wouldn’t even register with me as essentially being the same as Olive. For the small number of times his full name is ever going to be used in general life, it’s not going to be an issue even if some people do make a “green” connection.

MidnightPatrol · 02/03/2026 19:16

Sounds fine to me, middle names only really exist on paperwork anyway

Emmz1510 · 02/03/2026 19:49

Love Oliver, but don’t like it paired with Sage

MirandaBlu · 02/03/2026 19:52

I kind of get what you mean. It COULD sound like "olive or sage?" (as in, which shade of green do you prefer?) but I would never have thought of it. I'd go for it if you love it; his first and middle name together without his last name won't be used very much anyway.

Bloodycrossstitch · 02/03/2026 21:07

Will he be known as Oliver Sage or just Oliver with Sage as just a middle name?
If it the latter go for it if you'd be using both names day to day I wouldn’t personally as I just don’t think it flows well

Isthisthisreallife · 02/03/2026 21:14

I wouldn’t associate Oliver with Olive either. I would have said Sage was primarily a girls name though and personally, don’t think they sound right together. Maybe it’s that Oliver is a very common name and Sage is more unusual, not sure. Each to their own though so if you like it, go for it.

Instructions · 02/03/2026 21:27

I really like Oliver.

I don't think I've ever thought of Sage as a name! It really shouldn't matter though, middle names are optional when it comes to actually using them as you grow up.

Terfarina · 02/03/2026 21:36

I love it! I think names that can suit any personality are good and Oliver is a sound name - I have never known a nasty Oliver/Ollie. And the addition of Sage is delightful, really great name and just the right side of quirky.

xOlive · 02/03/2026 21:41

I wouldn’t even connect the name Oliver with the colour olive as Oliver is (and has been for a long while) a common name for a boy.
I like both names but I don’t think they necessarily go together?
With a middle name Sage, I’d assume a first name like August, River, Lennox or similar.

Babsandherwabs · 02/03/2026 22:02

Really like it! Love a less usual middle name.

surprisebaby12 · 02/03/2026 22:03

It’s not weird at all. Oliver has been the most popular boy name for like a decade and Sage is less common but still a real name

MrsStarskie · 02/03/2026 22:21

There are Olivers all across the different classes and jobs. Engineers and artists musicians and bin men.
I have known to Olives one I worked with. 1990s. Other was my Aunt (she was fun, but no gentleman)
Never known a Sage.

BauhausOfEliott · 03/03/2026 00:38

Oliver is a very popular name and nobody will associate it with the colour green.

Both the Sages I know are women; I’ve never known it used for a man.
