Has nobody seen Bedknobs and Broomsticks?!

Eglantine, eglantine, oh how you shine!

Dove for a girl. I just think it sounds so elegant and beautiful

Until you think it’s just a white pigeon

Ilaria is Hilary in Italian

Yeah, it hasn't got quite the same vibe has it!! 😁

My favourite boys’ name is Sebastian, which I first came to love watching Belle and Sebastian in the 1960s. I particularly loved it said in the French accent used in the series. I also associate it with Anthony Andrews playing Sebastian in Brideshead Revisited.

The other name I love is Orlando which also has childish associations (Orlando the Marmalade Cat).

There are lots of girls’ names that I love. Two of my favourites are Irene (but only when pronounced with three syllables) and Stephanie (can’t remember now why that didn’t make the shortlist)!

Daphne

Rosalind and Amarantha - although the shine has been taken off that one by Court of Thorns and Roses. I love the poem by Lovelace - Song to Amarantha, that she would dishevel her hair.

Unless you've got a Lest-ah accent, then it sounds the polar opposite to elegant and beautiful. Duvv, innit!

DD was in school with a Cordiana which I love. Also a Nilu short for Nilufar - I think that is a gorgeous name.

I knew a Zeno who was a very cool boy. Also knew an Athena - full name Athena Sunflower.

I also love Renee.

I went to school with a Solenn which I loved then and can imagine it working just as well as an adult. Also used to have a friend called Eleni and loved that too. Actually just realised maybe it’s ‘Len’ that I like in both.

Sorry but it makes me think of soap.

LibertyLily · 02/03/2026 17:06

Our DS is a Sebastian, named after Anthony Andrews character in Brideshead Revisited @Fifthtimelucky (although character-wise I actually preferred Jeremy Irons as Charles Ryder ❤️). I also love Gabriel.

Favourite/most beautiful imo girls name (and what we'd have chosen if we'd had a DD) is Clementine. Also Ottoline, Hebe and Liberty.

Ducksbehindthesofa · 02/03/2026 17:09

Whooop! My name has been mentioned up thread (and spelt 'correctly' too).

I went to school with a Corday which was unique at the time, but the owner of it was a bit of a brat, so it's not a name I recall with fondness.

As a teenager, I was obsessed with Brideshead Revisted, and to this day, I still love the name Cordelia.

Edited to add that I've just noticed the post above me! I named my kitten Sebastian after Brideshead.

@LibertyLily

Congratulations on your Sebastian! My husband vetoed it, but we didn’t have a boy so it wasn’t an issue!

I preferred Anthony Andrews to look at and Jeremy Irons to listen to!

Didshejustsaythatoutloud · 02/03/2026 17:16

I loved the name Priya when I first heard it years ago. I still think it's a beautiful name

PocketSand · 02/03/2026 17:17

Naomi - short name with 3 syllables pronounced phonetically - also the daughter of a teacher at primary school who was ‘perfect’ and never met anyone else in real life with that name. Obs I don’t know Naomi Campbell.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 02/03/2026 17:20

Arlanymor · 02/03/2026 02:58

Egg-luhn-tine - to rhyme with 'seen' at the end. Means 'sweet briar' if memory serves. A bit like Augustine.

Wasn’t the ‘witch’ in Bedknobs and Broomsticks Eglantine?

PortSalutPlease · 02/03/2026 17:23

I used to work with someone called Precious Blessing. She really was, as well!

PumpkinsAndCoconuts · 02/03/2026 17:23

I have always adored Gemma. But with an (authentic) Italian pronunciation. it’s just so soulful, strong and still soft! :)
Séréna (French pronunciation), Daphne (English pronunciation), Clémentine and Louisa. Ellis is really pretty as well.

Anton, Aaron, Arik, Emil, Sebastian and Nathaniel. Adam is also really pretty.

I'm not sure why, but I find Malachi a beautiful boys name. I have never met one although I know two Malik's.

I know some Malachys. It's uncommon but not unheard of in Ireland. It's not related to the Hebrew name Malachi, and the last syllable is pronounced -ey.
