I’m stuck between two names and need outside opinions šŸ˜… Which do you like better: Celeste or Dahlia? And why?

Celeste sounds like the name of a contraceptive pill.

UneasyMe · 08/02/2026 06:27

Celeste is beautiful. Makes me think of a starry sky.

Not keen on Dahlia.

cariadlet · 08/02/2026 06:35

If this isn't a wind up then neither.

Celeste is a beautiful name for a character in a novel but OTT in real life. When thinking about names , I try to imagine how they would sound not just on a newborn baby but on a teenager hanging around with her mates or a grown woman at work.

Dahlia's pretty awful. .

Gemstonebeach · 08/02/2026 06:40

Celeste for sure. I think Delia is a lot nicer than Dahlia.

muddyford · 08/02/2026 06:47

Bertie Wooster had a formidable Great Aunt Dahlia!

Thanks for this.
It was the vibe I got from the name but was racking my brains to try and remember where I'd heard it.

Clambering · 08/02/2026 08:59

I voted Celeste, but just adding an additional suggestion, have you thought of Daphne?

EleanorReally · 08/02/2026 09:01

dahlia is a flower surely?
i like Celest
or Delia

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 08/02/2026 09:02

Celeste if you must.

Moveoverdarlin · 08/02/2026 09:02

When I was at university in the early 2000s, I lived with six other girls in a shared house. Every single one of us was taking Celeste, the contraceptive Pill. For that reason it’s a no from me.

I usually love flower names but not Dahlia - so many prettier options.

Yes but so is Daisy, Rose, Marigold it’s not unusual to have a flower as a first name !

what about Begonia?
Pansy?
Primrose
Daffodil?
snowdrop?

yikesanotherbooboo · 08/02/2026 09:46

How about Daphne?
having said that I thing Dahlia ( with the usual English pronunciation) is rather nice. I’m not a fan of Celeste for no good reason.

allmycats · 08/02/2026 10:19

Isn’t Dahlia pronounced as Darleeah when used as a name. Not Dayleea like the flower.

fellupthekerb · 08/02/2026 10:29

I really don’t like Celeste as it sounds too much like molest. Dahlia is not my favourite but it’s fine.

NamingNoNames · 08/02/2026 11:32

Celeste the elephant or Great Aunt Dahlia?
Celeste sounds like a contraceptive.
Dahl-ya or Dail-ya?

ImPamDoove · 08/02/2026 11:35

You forgot the ā€˜neither’ option.

Calliopespa · 08/02/2026 11:35

Celeste for me, simply because I really don't like "D" names. The "duh" is such an ugly sound. Heavy and a bit thick.

Dahlia, Deirdre, Daphne, Dora, Dorothy ... I don't like any of them

See also hard "G" sounds: Gretel, Gerda ...

I don't mind a soft G as in Genevieve or Georgiana, but there is no equivalent for D.

Onefortheroad25 · 08/02/2026 11:42

I kinda like Celeste although it was the contraceptive pill of choice back in the late 90’s. Wasn’t Nicole Kidman Celeste in Big little lies?
I don’t like Dahlia. Prefer Delia or Delilah if you wanted that kinda sound.

MamaLoLo1 · 08/02/2026 12:28

Love love love Celeste and would be using it if it was my turn to pick šŸ˜†

Calliopespa · 08/02/2026 12:32

Just a thought Op: what about Celestine?

NamingNoNames · 08/02/2026 13:26

@Calliopespa , it's usually a man's name.

whatwouldlilacerullodo · 08/02/2026 13:28

I like both. I'd chose the one that fits best with the last name. Also, Google both of them + surname and see what comes up.

Better still, wait until the baby is born and choose the one that fits her. I did that with both my DC.

Calliopespa · 08/02/2026 13:36

NamingNoNames · 08/02/2026 13:26

@Calliopespa , it's usually a man's name.

I think it's gender neutral isn't it?

I certainly know some female ones.

what about Begonia?
Pansy?

snowdrop?

Or Hyacinth! On the other hand...

Not keen on either op. If you like flower names how about Daisy?
