I’m stuck between two names and need outside opinions šŸ˜… Which do you like better: Celeste or Dahlia? And why?

How about Celia?

Don't like Dahlia - think they may be difficulty for people to know how to pronounce it. Celeste makes me think of the ghost ship Marie Celeste.

I think it's gender neutral isn't it?

I certainly know some female ones.

You might do. Baby name explorer says it's used for girls.
I'd think it was a man of Nigerian heritage. (Celestine and Etta Tavernier - Wikipedia)

I think Delia is a pretty name, but otherwise I agree.

Have a look at Celestine Galli-Marie. She was an opera singer (mezzo-soprano, definitely female).

But it's also used by Popes. (So a male use)

dove76 · 08/02/2026 19:42

sorry I couldn't vote:-

Celeste contraceptive pill
Dahlia not keen at all

mathanxiety · 08/02/2026 19:44

Not a fan of either name really.

I prefer:
Celestine
Daphne
Daria
Delia
Seraphine
Celine
Serena
Dinah

NamingNoNames · 08/02/2026 19:51

@Calliopespa , I think more people will be familiar with the name of several Popes, the EE character, and a premier league footballer from the noughties than with an opera singer from over a century ago.

101Alsatians · 08/02/2026 19:53

Celine?

namechangeabc123 · 08/02/2026 19:55

I agree with PPs who recommend Celine as an alternative.

I like the name Celeste but I did used to be on that contraceptive pill…

I actually really like the name Dahlia though.

Elisirdamour · 08/02/2026 19:58

Celeste is beautiful. Dahlia gives me ā€œcomedy period playā€ vibes.

Idontknowhatnametochoose · 08/02/2026 20:05

Or Cerise.

noego · 08/02/2026 20:05

Je suis Celeste. Is what she said when I met her. And I've always loved her. :)

mycosyredwooltoque · 08/02/2026 20:13

They'Re both nice names, I like the sound of Celeste better but I wouldn't like Selly or Cel as a diminutive as nobody seems to escape having their names shortened.
The diminutive for Dahlia is nicer imo, Lia or Dee, but someone would probably call her Doll.

Lemonbam · 08/02/2026 21:45

Sorry I hate the name Celeste it reminds me of celeriac

EachotherAndAnother · 08/02/2026 21:53

I really dislike both of them. Agree with a PP about the initial "D" sounding quite harsh. And Celeste just makes me think of Daphne and Celeste (even before all the suggestions of Daphne!).
That said, wouldn't the world be boring if we were all the same? You like what you like šŸ¤·šŸ¼ā€ā™€ļø And I've certainly met children whose names made me cringe on first meeting them, and as I've gotten to know them the name has just come to be associated in my mind with that particular (usually very sweet) child. I'm sure your child would cast their own lovely glow onto whichever name you chose.

Giraffehaver · 08/02/2026 22:21

Both are pretty but I prefer Celeste

littlebilliie · 08/02/2026 23:20

I knew a Celeste she was creative and formidable. I think it’s a name for a string women

It's a gender neutral name.

I know two, one in her 50's, one in her 20's. I'm not sure why you keep arguing the point.

It isn't even the name OP is considering; it was just a suggestion.

NamingNoNames · 09/02/2026 09:42

@Calliopespa , it's you who is arguing. I doubt that OP cares how many you know or their ages.

Maybe not. I only offered a suggestion she might like.

ETA people were referencing the contraceptive pill as a reason not to use Celeste, so I thought it might be a compromise.

UneasyMe · 10/02/2026 08:10

The contraceptive pill was/is Cilest, not Celeste!

NamingNoNames · 10/02/2026 09:44

@UneasyMe , they sound the same.

UneasyMe · 10/02/2026 12:04

NamingNoNames · 10/02/2026 09:44

@UneasyMe , they sound the same.

Kind of. But that’s like saying Sophie sounds like sofa and is therefore a bad name. Also a quick google reveals Cilest was discontinued years ago

Skybluepinky · 10/02/2026 12:32

Neither, what are the other options?

NamingNoNames · 10/02/2026 12:36

@UneasyMe ,But that’s like saying Sophie sounds like sofa and is therefore a bad name. I didn't say Celeste was a bad name, but Cilest and Celeste sound the same, Sophie and Sofa do not.
