Sibling for Eloise

Banderz · 04/02/2026 13:35

Our daughter's name is Eloise and we are expecting another child in the summer. We won't find out the gender.

Our final names are

Girl: Matilda, Simone or Esme

Boy: Arlo, Robin or William

Which are the favourites?

Eloise and Robin sound so sweet… just another option but I also think Robyn is gorgeous for a girl too!

Genevieve has four syllables in French, though - ge-ne-vi-eve.

And Eloise is spelled Éloïse in French, but that’s not how the OP is spelling it, so I’d assume they wouldn’t use the French pronunciation for Genevieve either.

Giraffehaver · 05/02/2026 22:34

Simone or William would be my favourites

But they are - op has said it’s no good because the dh doesn’t want a four-syllable name. They are a European family.

Genevieve and Eloïse both have three syllables though.

I've just seen your latest comment as well as this one. Im not sure why your engaging in such a pedantic way, it's just not necessary

I really like Matilda, strong historical associations, good shortenings (i like Mattie).
Simone has a trendy vibe, and i know a baby Simone, but I just don't like the moan bit of the sound.
Esme feels twee to me.

Robin and William both great. Arlo ok.

I'd choose Matilda for sure of the girls, and Robin or William for a boy.

Girl: Matilda
Simone - Sim-own or Sim-onn?
Esme - Es-mee/Ezmy or Es-may/Ez-may?

Boy: Robin or William. I don't like Arlo.

Yeah, Sim onn sounds nice. Si moan doesn't. Don't know where the OP is based but, if in the UK, you'll get the latter pronunciation.

And a German, Austrian, Dutch, Danish girls name

All nice names but I think I’d go Esme and William. Only note on Esme is that it sometimes has pronunciation issues - I floated it as a name idea and a few people said ah Es MAY is lovely and I had to say no it’s Es ME!!

I say Es MAY! Just makes me think of Sewing bee but that's not a bad thing!

Yes it is.

Elisirdamour · 09/02/2026 22:33

Matilda or Arlo

SemiRetiredLoveGoddeess · 09/02/2026 22:51

Notice lots of really old fashioned names are making a comeback.

Think Robin is OK.
But not any of the girls names.

Anabellie · 09/02/2026 22:56

Matilda and William

NamingNoNames · 10/02/2026 10:18

@Lollylavender , which ones?

grangehilltuba · 10/02/2026 14:56

All nice names OP! I like them all except Esme (nothing wrong with it, just not a fan of the sound) and Arlo. It's not the popularity of Arlo that would bother me, it's the trendiness. I think it will sound really dated by the time DC is an adult.

Simone is particularly lovely in my opinion, and if you have a girl, I think I'd want something similarly gorgeous in comparison to Eloise so she doesn't feel short-changed. Eloise and Simone are both relatively unusual despite being familiar and very elegant. Matilda is nice but sounds a bit "solid" in comparison to Eloise to my ear.

I like both Robin and William a lot, but I have known a few male Robins who weren't fans of their names (not sure why, it's a very nice name). So I would probably go with William for that reason.
