What do we think of Ottoline? How would you pronounce it?

Otta-leen for me. I think it’s fine, pretty fancy. There’s an Ottilie and an Otterly (😯) at DD’s nursery so Ottoline isn’t too radical to me. Same category as Adeline, Evangeline, Emmeline, Amelie etc

plentyofsunshine · 30/01/2026 10:07

I love it!

WhitsunWedding · 30/01/2026 10:08

Very ugly.

savemetoo · 30/01/2026 10:08

I'd pronounce as spelt if I saw it written down because I wouldn't know how else to pronounce it. I think Ottilie is much prettier though.

SchnizelVonKrumm · 30/01/2026 10:11

I think it's lovely and much prettier than Ottilie. I'd pronounce the last syllable to rhyme with line/pine.

bells456 · 30/01/2026 10:18

I think I prefer the “leen” ending sound but like “line” too. Just wondering which is more likely to be assumed.

Weirdly I don’t care much for Ottilie (sounds a bit frivolous to me?) but really like Ottoline. I wonder if it will be mixed up a lot, especially with the “leen” ending as it sounds so close to Ottilie.

I'd say line, like Caroline.
My accent doesn't pronounce t's in the middle of words, so I'd butcher the first half of the name.

stickygotstuck · 30/01/2026 10:25

Ear drops, sorry.

Pettenell · 30/01/2026 10:25

I assumed the last syllable was pronounced 'leen'. As you may get both endings I would suggest you choose one and just be prepared to correct people. I have come across Adelines pronounced both line and leen, and Maya/Maias pronounced both My-ah and May-ah. Just be aware and make your choice.

I quite like it and prefer it over Ottilie.

CollieModdle · 30/01/2026 10:36

I would say line until told or heard it was leen

DeathBanana · 30/01/2026 10:40

I worked with one. She was an otter line

AlbieJiggered · 30/01/2026 10:59

Otter line

YourWinter · 30/01/2026 10:59

Ugh. It looks like a furniture brand.

PutTheScrewInTheTuna · 30/01/2026 11:02

Yuck!
To be fair though, I also really really dislike ‘Ottilie’ but I couldn’t pinpoint why.

AlbieJiggered · 30/01/2026 11:10

@PutTheScrewInTheTuna , I am not keen on Emily (it's ok but wouldn't choose it) either and it's the 'ill-ee' bit I don't like in it.
Ottilie seems much worse because the Ott makes me think of otters and the 'ilie' looks twee.

ChurchWindows · 30/01/2026 11:11

It makes me think of Ottoline Morrell of the Bloomsbury set. She had a very interesting life.

I think it's a gorgeous name, but would assume Otter-line (line as in washing line) until told otherwise.

DiscoDuck40 · 30/01/2026 11:48

Love love this name!

DiscoDuck40 · 30/01/2026 11:49

I always thought it was pronounced 'Otterleen' but not 100% sure.

GoldenRosebee · 30/01/2026 12:27

OTTO-lyn

GoldenRosebee · 30/01/2026 12:27

prefer Ottilie

Nursemumma92 · 30/01/2026 20:16

Otter line is how I would pronounce it. Otterley/Ottilie is much prettier.

Wakemeupinapril · 30/01/2026 20:17

Cream for piles imo.

MeAndMyGhost · 30/01/2026 20:20

I don't think it's a pretty name.

HattiesBag · 30/01/2026 20:27

I'd not want to be saddled with this name personally, sorry
