What do we think of Ottoline? How would you pronounce it?

OP posts:

Tintackedsea · 30/01/2026 20:27

My wee girl loves the Ottoline books!

SuzieYellow · 30/01/2026 20:38

I would pronounce it “Ott-o” (as in the boys name Otto) and then Line (as in Caroline). I’ve not seen this name before but would maybe wrongly assume for a girl it would be Ottaline

Vixenlover · 30/01/2026 20:52

I would say it Otto-leen which is much nicer than Otto-line. So much so in fact that I don’t think I could risk it. You’re safer to stick to Ottilie.

intrepidpanda · 30/01/2026 21:55

I would say it to rhyme with vaseline
It sounds quite brand name to me (maybe a car shampoo cause of auto sound)

emmetgirl · 30/01/2026 21:57

Ottilie is better.

99pwithaflake · 30/01/2026 21:58

It sounds like a medication 🥴

BertieWoostersChaps · 30/01/2026 21:59

My DD liked those books too! I like it.

I have never seen "Ottilie" spelled "Otterly" FGS. Who is doing this 😳

LivingTheDreamish · 31/01/2026 03:04

I would instinctively say OttoLYNE like Caroline. Quite a grand name but I do like it.

VenusClapTrap · 31/01/2026 10:34

I think it’s lovely. I’ve always known it to be pronounced to rhyme with Caroline. The Ottoline books were a huge hit in this house.

It makes me think of Ottoline Morrell of the Bloomsbury set. She had a very interesting life.

My first thought too - and I like it,

I have always thought of her as Otter-line like Caroline.

PrincessOfPreschool · 31/01/2026 10:52

Really dislike. I read it as 'Otto - leen' so like an established boys name with 'leen' on the end to make it female, like Davidleen, or Frankleen!

Ottilie is different (though I don't love it either) as it's not Otto lie so it's basically Tilly with something added on the front.

I would not think to pronounce like Caroline but once told then I would manage it.

AlbieJiggered · 31/01/2026 11:51

@PrincessOfPreschool , Pauline, Albertine, Clementine, Geraldine ...

Frankleen and Davidleen (didn't he make films?) are inspired. Shades of Jimberley about them.Smile

I think we can all agree that if OP suggested Pauline, Albertine or Geraldine, there would be a very different response! Clementine is only rescued by being more well known as a fruit, the 'ine' ending and Clement as a boy's name being very rare indeed.

AlbieJiggered · 31/01/2026 12:26

I don't know... they seem a bit dated and not very pretty but they're not bad. I know a Clement and a Clementine but they're not children.

Paulina and Geraldina sound a bit less dated. I can't separate Clementine from the image a round female Tango man.Smile

DeltaVariant · 31/01/2026 13:28

Iwontbethere · 30/01/2026 10:20

I'd say line, like Caroline.
My accent doesn't pronounce t's in the middle of words, so I'd butcher the first half of the name.

same here. A very northern accent and it’d be o’ill-een almost.

tsmainsqueeze · 31/01/2026 13:42

I think these types of names are the middle class version of what people refer to as 'chav' names of which i will not give an example but i'm sure people can guess.
There are so many beautiful names to choose from that aren't following a trend.

MrsFaustus · 31/01/2026 13:46

There’s a character in a Danish series on channel 4 called Ottilia. Very pretty I think.Ottilie Morrell was a bit of a one, I read that DH Lawrence based Lady Chatterley’s Lover on her relationship.

user2848502016 · 31/01/2026 13:54

It’s pretty
I would say “Otto - leen”

Lollylavender · 31/01/2026 15:26

Caroline, Ottoline, so I’d say Otto-line (line like line!)

Calliopespa · 31/01/2026 16:20

I quite like Clementine and Albertine.

Clementine was a name before it was a fruit. It was named after the guy who found it, Clement, but Clementine already existed as a name I believe.

I see them a bit like Harriet (for Harry) and Henrietta (from Henry), which I like.

Kumquatzest · 31/01/2026 16:54

It reminds me of the book, Ottoline and the Yellow Cat.
I think it's fine, though bear in mind it will be pronounced with a glottal stop in some areas.

Mangoandbroccoli · 31/01/2026 17:17

I would assume it had the same pronunciation as Caroline. In my head, it might end in the ‘leen’ sound if it was spelled Otteline, following the similar pattern for names such as Emmeline, Evangeline etc. It’s the second ‘o’ in Otto that makes me assume that it is ‘line’ (as in ‘washing’) that follows it.

peacefulpeach · 31/01/2026 17:19

I like it, it’s from a famous book I can’t remember. However I know an Ottoline and her nickname seems to be ‘the otter’, which isn’t as pretty…

Sofado · 31/01/2026 18:04

I really dislike it. It’s heavy, clunky and lacking in style.

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 31/01/2026 18:06

I don’t like it.
