Thoughts on Sabine?

My husband and I are leaning towards ‘French’ girl names as his family is from a country in the Middle East with deep French influence. He really loves Sabine (sah-been), and I like it a lot as well, but I’m wondering if it’s a little TOO uncommon here in the US? Neither of us have ever met a Sabine. Too similar to the name Sabrina?

Genevieve is a very, very close second and a name I have loved long before we found out we were expecting. So torn!

We won’t be sharing the name until the baby is born but I can’t fight the urge to solicit feedback, lol

Love Sabine, so beautiful and chic. In the UK at least Genevieve is a little more commonly used. Sabine unusual but a known French name. I think it’s perfect.

Aw, she could be ‘Beenie’ for a cute baby nickname!

TomatoSandwiches · 14/01/2026 10:18

Sabine is adorable for a little girl and yet very appropriate for a dignified adult woman, we need more Sabines imo.

Giddykiddy · 14/01/2026 10:18

tres chic !

KittyEckersley · 14/01/2026 10:19

I think Sabine will be pronounced more correctly although some may pronounce it sa-been-a. I think the French pronunciation of Genevieve, Jen-a-vee-ev is much nicer than Jen-a-veeve.

Mosaic80 · 14/01/2026 10:20

I think Sabine is really lovely especially with her heritage.

roshi42 · 14/01/2026 10:21

To add, Sabrine (pronounced Sah-breen) is a variant to the more commonly used Sabrina, in case you prefer that.

RudolphRNR · 14/01/2026 10:23

Sabine is lovely, very pretty!

Calliopespa · 14/01/2026 10:36

I know a Sabine who is French.

To me I immediately think of Rape of the Sabine Women, so Genevieve is a much better choice imo. With the French pronunciation Genevieve is a really pretty name.

Agree re 'rape of the Sabine women"

I know a Sabine, always thought it was a cool name.

Leavesandthings · 14/01/2026 10:56

Beautiful name

Nursemumma92 · 14/01/2026 11:24

I went to with a Sabine, lovely name. Never met another but is it beautiful.

Grammarninja · 14/01/2026 11:35

I think it's lovely. I also love Delphine.and Amelie.
Genevieve turns into Jenny; I know a few.

saraclara · 14/01/2026 12:06

I thing you will get a mixture of pronunciations. Rather than sah-been, you'll likely get sa-been, suh-been or (horribly) say-bine.

We have a Sabina on the Polish side of my family, which I like.

French names tend to sound beautiful with a french accent, but not so much in an English one!

Emanwenym · 14/01/2026 12:09

You won't get the French pronunciation of Geneviève and I don't like the Jennuh-veev pronunciation.

Sabine is lovely.
The only potential problem with it is that it is zab-een-uh in Germany. You're not in Germany Smile

OneOfEachPlease · 14/01/2026 12:11

Love it! Also love Genevieve! To be honest my daughter has a name which is not frequently heard but known by everyone and it still gets spoonarised all the time into a different name. So you can’t really make a judgement based on the fact that she might occasionally get called Sabrina because you could call her Sara and that might happen! 😂

Fifthtimelucky · 14/01/2026 12:16

I’m afraid I also think of the Sabine women.

Genevieve is a lovely name (and just reminds me of an old car)!

Egglio · 14/01/2026 12:21

I have known two women with the name Sabina which I think is also a pretty alternative.

Squirrelsnut · 14/01/2026 12:23

Beautiful name with an unpleasant association, unfortunately.

user1492757084 · 14/01/2026 12:28

My doctor, when I was young, had a lovely daughter called Sabine.

Justmadesourkraut · 14/01/2026 12:29

Love Sabine. She is one of the main characters in Mr Bean's Holiday - but she's very sweet and lovely, so not a bad association. (You can see that my cultural roots don't go back to classic times!)

MaxandMeg · 14/01/2026 12:31

Yup. Rape of the Sabine Women. Subject of much art in many galleries.

Emanwenym · 14/01/2026 12:33

Genevieve might get mixed up with Jennifer or Guinevere.

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 14/01/2026 12:40

I like Sabine, I think Genevieve will get shortened to Jenny/Gen imo (which are also nice names!)

cloudjumper · 14/01/2026 13:21

FYI Sabine is also a common name in Germany, so many people will pronounce it that way, ie. sounding the -e at the end (Sa-Bee-Nu).
