Sheila, Lorraine or Glinda?

I know these names are unconventional but I was thinking they might be nice. I was originally going to go for Sheila or Lorraine (Lorrie for short) but after watching Wicked I’m thinking maybe Glinda would be fun!

Lorraine is not unconventional. I know three Lorraines

RoamingToaster · 31/12/2025 14:15

They’re dated but not in a good way at the moment. There might be a time when they come around again. I quite like Lori as a shortened name but there are more modern names that can have that. Although also not common for children I’d much prefer Lauren or Laura. You also have Laurel but it’s too unisex for my taste.

As in children/ babies? 😲

TimSamandLulu · 31/12/2025 14:50

I don’t like any of them (with apologies to anyone who is named those, my own name would be slaughtered on here too). I do like Greta and Vivienne a lot.

Thanks for all the suggestions and feedback - after discussion with DH and DSis I think I’m going to go with Sheila and maybe have Lorraine as the middle name.

Brilliant, well done for not being put off by all the poor taste posters - Sheila is an awesome name and you are just a few short years ahead of your time in choosing it.

Well Sheila Lorraine is better than Quiche Lorraine!

I quite liked the suggestion of Sile above, which for me put a whole different slant on Sheila.

Guys I know they’re unconventional but some of these comments are really mean. #Bekind

Oi! I'm 40 and all the Sheila's I know are older than me! Grin

First things first 40 is not old and even if it was why is that a bad thing? Also why is everyone so mean? I was expecting some comments such as ‘They’re quite strange or old or uncommon’ but I certainly wasn’t expecting ‘You’re a bad person and you hate your like because you fucking like the name Sheila or Lorraine’. Apologies for the rant:

@plinkyplonk123 since you started this thread Sheila has grown on me.
I think it's perfectly fine. One of my favourite books is "Otherwise Known as Sheila the Great" by Judy Blume. Admittedly the book was written in the 70s when Sheila was more popular as a name but names go in cycles so I doubt your baby Sheila will stand out amongst all the other "old" names that are coming back.
🙂

XGiveMeStrengthX · 31/12/2025 18:16

How about Lorelei instead of Lorraine - can still have Lorri for short?

Or Eloise?

XGiveMeStrengthX · 31/12/2025 18:17

Or Claudia, Sylvie, Lydia?

BusySittingDown · 31/12/2025 18:22

Have only read the first page but middle aged women aren't called Lorraine and Sheila, surely?

Middle aged women are called Laura, Michelle and Claire i.e my friends that are my age (40s).

My late mum had friends called Sheila and Lorraine and they would be in their 80s!

I had an elderly relative named Sheila and she fucking hated it.

I’m sorry OP, but calling your daughter Sheila Lorraine is a very unusual choice

Yes, this! I think some people commenting must be really young as I don't know any Lorraines and Sheilas my age (I'm 40). I remember my older bosses when I was a teenager were called these names.

NotDarkGothicMama · 31/12/2025 18:48

Sheila and Lorraine are very of their time and aren't old enough to be past the "dated" stage yet. Glinda will date extremely quickly.

Go a generation further back and you'll do better. Pearl, Stevie, Dorothy, Margot, Elizabeth, Nancy, Alice, Evelyn, Julia and Rosalind are all nice.
