Sheila, Lorraine or Glinda?

I know these names are unconventional but I was thinking they might be nice. I was originally going to go for Sheila or Lorraine (Lorrie for short) but after watching Wicked I’m thinking maybe Glinda would be fun!

I know a Lorraine who goes by Rainy which is lovely.
That's the nicest thing I can think of to say. I'm sorry op. I am usually really kind and laid back with baby names but if this is real please don't do it.

I agree Lorraine is the best - and is it not Rainey as the nn?

But there have been a suspicious number of these threads lately. I know Mabel etc have come back but I really don't think the world is ready for the Brendas, Lindas, Sheilas and Shirleys etc that are being tabled recently. Is this not just a "whyever not?" kind of provocation?

Lorraine isn't actually that bad, but Glinda? Really? And Sheila?

HeartyBlueRobin · 29/12/2025 21:43

Well I'm one of the names! 😞

Dinosaurhearmeroar · 29/12/2025 21:45

They’re unconventional for a reason - they’re all hideous.

😂
2 of my sheep are called Shelia and Lorraine!
They are a right bunch - Eileen, Doreen, Mauren, Nora, Mildred, Glo(ria) Dororthy (Dot), Pearl, Margaret (Maggie), Elizabeth (Lizzy), Doris, Edna, Peggy..... they are GORGEOUS

Edited

My dad had three chickens called Doris, Edna and Peggy. Great names for slightly eccentric farm animals 😁

Newyear26 · 29/12/2025 21:45

Really bad, all of them.

loislovesstewie · 29/12/2025 21:45

What about Gladys, Vera, Phyllis, Freda, Wilhelmina or Bertha.

My last set of chickens were Agnes, Enid and Mildred

If you want to do unconventional
but NICE go for Vivienne. I know a gorgeous little baby called this and it’s fabulous. Called vivi for short.

Guys I know they’re unconventional but some of these comments are really mean. #Bekind

Ah you’ve knackered it now.

They wouldn’t be my choice but last year I had a Linda in my Reception class. Taught several of her siblings and remember when Linda was born and thinking, “why, oh, why?”. But now Linda suits her name and is quite quirky, so I like it. If you’ve got your heart set on them then go for it. Your child will grow into a name. My favourite out of your suggested names is Lorraine - shortened to Lorri on all but official documents.

Koolandorthegang · 29/12/2025 21:52

How about Gloria? I bloody love the name Gloria. I am coming round to Glinda as well. I see shiny when I think of that name

Me too. I can't believe how despised my name is. Makes me feel a bit crap.🥵

Waitingfordoggo · 29/12/2025 21:54

Have you considered Pauline? Or Jackie?

loislovesstewie · 29/12/2025 21:54

Or Bunty?

GreywackeJ · 29/12/2025 21:55

When I was born in 1972, my dad really wanted to call me Lorraine. I’m eternally grateful that my mum put her foot down and refused.

sakura06 · 29/12/2025 21:55

I like Lorraine, but prefer Laurie or Lorna. I like Linda too (there was a thread on that recently)! I don’t think you can go with Glinda though!

SheSpendsAFortune · 29/12/2025 21:55

They're all terrible.

Most names are despised on here.

Other than Glinda, which is too linked to the Wicked film, I don’t think there’s anything wrong with the names. Just probably a few years too early for a revival.

MN hates my name as well (not one mentioned on this thread so far!)

plinkyplonk123 · 29/12/2025 21:57

another name I was thinking of was Greta perhaps, or Alison maybe? They’re perhaps a tad bit less controversial?

I can’t speak for anyone else but for me it’s not that they have an awful sound or association, just that they’re very ‘of their time’ and it’s hard to imagine any of them for a baby.

Dollymylove · 29/12/2025 21:59

I like Sheila. Time it was resurrected 😆

Vivienne! Ooh I like that!

Not to put a downer on it, but the first thing I associate with Vivienne is that drag queen who died of a ketamine overdose earlier this year.

No neither
