Tasmin

DH has just suggested this name. We were joking about having a whirling dervish child with the nn Taz and he said Tasmin.
I checked it was a real name and we both really like it.
Tamsin doesnt have the same appeal as we both know Tammys who are quite wet...sorry if you are or have got a Tammy!
What do you think?

It’s Tamsin, not Tasmin.
Tamsin is lovely.

LancashireButterPie · 23/12/2025 23:42

I like it.

ResusciAnnie · 23/12/2025 23:42

Tasmin would probably be misread for Tamsin a lot which might be annoying. Yasmin? I know that it doesn’t have the Taz but the Yas I know is pretty Taz-like and names don’t inform personality really.

DramaAlpaca · 23/12/2025 23:42

Of course Tasmin is a name!

OP, it's pretty. I do prefer Tamsin/Tamzin, but Tasmin is lovely too.

IsItBeesThoughLooshkin · 23/12/2025 23:43

I think there was an 80s popstar called Tasmin Archer. That’s the only time I’ve heard it.

HopSpringsEternal · 23/12/2025 23:43

It would hurt my dyslexic brain

fashionqueen0123 · 23/12/2025 23:43

I read it as Tamsin.

Tasmin makes me think of Tasmania. Or a typo for Tamsin. I think you’d just have people getting it wrong all the time tbh!

tartyflette · 23/12/2025 23:44

I always thought Tasmin was an, er, garbled derivation of Tamsin. Which is a much better name and doesn't look like a mistake.

MsGrumpytrousers · 23/12/2025 23:46

It just looks like a typo. I’d choose Yasmin or Jasmine instead.

EconomyClassRockstar · 23/12/2025 23:49

I prefer Tamsen. More an urn than an in at the end.

BananaCandle · 23/12/2025 23:51

Not for me, sorry. Jasmine is better.

LilyLemonade · 24/12/2025 00:11

I like it, and have occasionally heard it before.

Somehowgirl · 24/12/2025 00:12

Has to be Tamsin. Tamsin is a gorgeous name.

I don’t like this thing on Mumsnet of starting with a nickname and working backwards. Nicknames come about organically- you don’t know what personality your child is going to have.

Blowingastorm · 24/12/2025 00:20

I Think it is usually Tamsin or Tamasin which is a more classic version. Very lovely names.

Giraffehaver · 24/12/2025 00:56

Tamsin is not gorgeous to us as stated in original post so thanks but no thanks!
It's a proper name. Jasmine no good because we have a Jasper dog and 1 Jazzy is enough! Thank you to those who like it.
I'm surprised at how protective I feel.

Your OP: “what do you think?”

Most people don’t like it. Name your kid what you want and don’t bother posting if you don’t want to hear anything negative about the name.

Dollybantree · 24/12/2025 01:04

It makes me think of the Tasmanian devil - I don’t like it it’s harsh sounding and also sounds dated. I’m not keen on Tamsin either.

gillybombilly · 24/12/2025 01:08

Lovely - reminds me of the Singer Tasmin Archer (Sleeping Satellite, etc).

theunbreakablecleopatrajones · 24/12/2025 01:10

I think she may end up Tammy so if you don't like that, wouldn't

Pranksters · 24/12/2025 03:45

KnickerlessParsons · 23/12/2025 23:40

Tasmin is a name.

This thread is so weird.

MyTwoSense · 24/12/2025 04:04

What about Tasma? Similar and won't be mistaken for Tamsin

AshesUnderUricon · 24/12/2025 04:14

You would be sentencing your child to a lifetime of people thinking 'poor girl, she can't even spell her own name'.

RudolphRNR · 24/12/2025 04:35

Tasmin is a great name! I think of the fab song Sleeping Satellite and I also knew a girl named Tasmin after the singer of that song. I also knew a Tasnim which you may like too.

FromageTime · 24/12/2025 05:05

She’d have a lifetime of people assuming it’s Tamsin.

Pettenell · 24/12/2025 05:20

I like it. It's not a name I've come across before, but I find it appealing, and the cute short form Taz! My name book says it's probably comes from a variation on Jasmine.

I love Tamsin too and agree with PPs that there may be some confusion, but I wouldn't let that stop you. (I have the most common name of my decade, spelt and pronounced in the usual way, and people still often get it wrong - so confusion is par for the course...)

A different, but same-sounding name, is Tasman. I have some older male relatives born in Tasmania who were called Tasman, Tas for short, clearly named for the place.
