Douglas Arthur or Alexander

We both have very Scottish surnames and are Scottish - I changed my surname to middle name after married so the baby will have my middle and surname.

Which name is nicest?
Douglas (baby Dougie)
Arthur
Alexander
or
Douglas Alexander?

No help as I love all 3 names! Alexander has more potential for shortened names.

Love the name Alexander but also love Douglas Alexander.
The only problem I can see is being nicknamed Dougie - Hey Dougie.

TheGirlOnTheLanding · 08/12/2025 08:14

The fact that there is an MP called Douglas Alexander would put me off combining the two. Alexander is my favourite of the three names

Just about to say this - even though I quite like him!

Alexander is a great name - I like it shortened to Sandy!

DisplayPurposesOnly · 08/12/2025 08:41

Alexander or Arthur. Less keen on Douglas.

Peternell · 08/12/2025 08:44

All good names but I would choose Douglas. It's less expected than the others, and is very appealing. Dougie is lovely as the natural nn!

PegDope · 08/12/2025 08:45

Alexander. By a country mile.

Enko · 08/12/2025 08:48

Douglas Arthur is amazing imo

User6761 · 08/12/2025 08:50

Love Douglas - until recently I only knew Dougs in their 70s and 40s. But recently I've met two young Dougies.

Also love Alexander (and Alasdair).

But not keen on Arthur at all, sorry. For me it has a totally different feel to the other names. Douglas and Alexander have the same vibe as Fraser, Struan, Gregor etc. Arthur fits more with Albert, Freddie, Tom. That might just be me!

Funderthighs · 08/12/2025 09:16

They’re all lovely but Alexander would be my favourite.

Dolphindances · 08/12/2025 10:00

My fave is Alexander but my husbands least
His fave is Douglas

Alpacajigsaw · 08/12/2025 11:12

Alexander

Douglas and Arthur are horrible names.

Oh I'd forgotten that shortening!

I like Alexander and Arthur.

I'm not so keen on Douglas, but it's a perfectly good name. I had a Christmas cracker joke one year: what do you call a man who has lost his shovel? Dug-less.

I just don't, on the whole, like names starting with D generally: David, Duncan, Davina. It's the "duh" sound. But there's nothing really wrong with it.

LiquoriceAllsorts2 · 08/12/2025 11:59

Definitely Alexander

Emanwenym · 08/12/2025 12:03

Douglas - like but he'll be Doug
Arthur - ok but too popular
Alexander - ok but popular. Long so will be shortened.

I like Douglas and quite wanted to use it (we are in Scotland) but DP didn't love it quite as much. We like names that lend themselves to lots of short versions and variants, because we want our DC to have options, but although we like all the variations on Alexander (including Sandy) we ended up not liking the full version that much so didn't do with it. If it's a consideration, you see quite a few Alexanders and Arthurs around, but fewer baby Douglases, so if you are wanting a normal Scottish name but that's not the same as everyone else's, Douglas would work for that.

DinosaurDina · 08/12/2025 13:03

I really like the name Douglas. Douglas Alexander sounds really good to me.

Mariammaom · 08/12/2025 14:37

Douglas!

Alex is so overused and dull - I know soo many male and female Alexes. Arthur feels too fashionable and may date soon

UrsulaBelle · 08/12/2025 14:49

I know lots and lots of Alexanders all aged around 25 or so, so while it's a great name and fits the Scottish theme it does feel a little dated to me. Douglas is great. As an alternative, how about Angus?

RuthW · 08/12/2025 14:55

Douglas Alexander.

huuskymam · 08/12/2025 14:57

I have a brother Douglas, he gets called all sorts and lots of jokes when he was younger. I wouldn't inflict that name on a child..

Seaoftroubles · 08/12/2025 15:14

Alexander, great name, will be shortened but there's lots of choice. l am biased as l have one but still think it's a classic.

Ellanory · 08/12/2025 15:20

Alexander by a long way
