We both have very Scottish surnames and are Scottish - I changed my surname to middle name after married so the baby will have my middle and surname.

Which name is nicest?
Douglas (baby Dougie)
Arthur
Alexander
or

Alexander by a mile.

Douglas Alexander

Arthur and Alex/ander has been / is being overdone as first names, Douglas is nicely unusual but everyone knows it. And Douglas Alexander is just splendidly Scottish.

Alexander is indeed overused. Is your surname very unusual?

What about something like Dougal or Dugald as a less dated version of Douglas?

ChubbyFecker · 08/12/2025 23:11

Douglas is an underused and glorious name

snugasabug75 · 08/12/2025 23:20

Alexander- Xander

Alexander is my favourite for definite - a strong and classic name.

How are you pronouncing Dougie? I know a Scottish Douglas and he goes by “Doogie”.

LivingTheDreamish · 09/12/2025 02:43

All nice but I'm loving Douglas/Dougie. Douglas Arthur?

Also like Laurence/Laurie which to me has a similar vibe.

I agree its our next door neighbours name.

The other name I loved was Cameron but it means nose in Gaelic which put me off 🤣

I know 2 Dougie’ in the midlands . The first one is growing up now and it seemed like a “out there” name at the time but now it’s definitely coming back . So I would say Dougie . Arthur is quite popular now .

I know a lovely Douglas (Scottish) - and a lovely Alexander. If you like both names, go Douglas Alexander. It’s a splendid name.
