We've got three boys and not finding out the sex. So I might be back asking for boy name advice!
But for now here's our girl list
Primrose
Pearl
Keira
Emerald (maybe too unusual?) although we like Emmy
Maeve
Esme
Scarlet

Any views welcome!

@Wrongsaidfredd , Keira is dated, and Ciara is dated in Ireland.

Theres quite a few at my dcs school, I love the name and would consider it if I was having a girl but a close friend already has a Keira so it would seem like copying. I wouldn’t let a slight slip in the rankings over thirty years put me off.

Wowsersbrowsers · 03/12/2025 10:48

Would you consider Siobhan? Its Irish but unlikely to be mispronounced as it's so popular these days.

DuchessOfNarcissex · 03/12/2025 10:51

It was more of a sharp peak, @Wrongsaidfredd , and celebrity-related. Dropping from #33 to #415 isn't a slight dip.

I’m seeing 359 to 415 on the link you posted

My bad I didn’t scroll down and see the chart

Wrongsaidfredd · 03/12/2025 10:55

Still wouldn’t let it put me off, plenty of young Keira’s out there in my experience

Still nothing that jumps out as 'the one'.
Irish girls names I like are
Ciara
Orla
Maeve
Fiadh (Fia)

But Orla sounds odd with our surname. Our surname rhymes with board. So it sounds like Orla board ('all aboard'). I just can't help thinking it every time I say the name!

I think Ciara will be mispronounced 90% of the time. Maeve is ok but it's just not jumping out at me. I still consider Fiadh sometimes.

If you like Ciara but worry about pronunciation what about Cara?

I think it’s Italian more than Irish, but it often seems to be listed as an Irish baby name too.
(Cara means friend in Irish, but the word in Irish is pronounced corra, not Cah-rah like the name).

4thbabynamehelp · 03/12/2025 11:04

I do worry a bit about the potential datedness of Keira. I've got a name that was popular in the 80s but even more popular in the 70s. So on hearing my name people just naturally assume I'm either my age or older. Id rather a name didn't age my child ideally but I realise with name trends its hard to avoid.

DuchessOfNarcissex · 03/12/2025 11:14

It would me because the Ciaras I know are 30+, and young might be teenage.

If you like it, use it, but I wouldn't want to have a name where people assumed I was older than I am. (Speaking from experience, I have a 'granny name'.)

SmashingGemini · 03/12/2025 11:23

Primrose - Primmy - so cute, or Esme.

4thbabynamehelp · 03/12/2025 12:51

How are people pronouncing Esme? ez-may? Or Ez-mee?

OP posts:
DuchessOfNarcissex · 03/12/2025 13:13

@4thbabynamehelp , both. It's inevitable. I'd say Esmy (Same sort of vowel/stress as Leslie)

I say Ezmay

Twoshoesnewshoes · 03/12/2025 13:46

Ez may

WildCherryBlossom · 03/12/2025 14:21

I say Ez-may too

4thbabynamehelp · 03/12/2025 15:02

I think we would go for the Ez-may pronunciation. But I like both. Just don't want it to be too annoying for her! I guess it just takes one correction. My poor son gets Sillian so often, it's not as annoying as that.
I'm keeping it on the list!

Emerald or Scarlet

GroundControlToMajorTomCat · 03/12/2025 20:20

Emerald is lovely. There is an actress in Neighbours called Emerald

DuchessOfNarcissex · 03/12/2025 20:27

Emerald Fennell - Wikipedia
Emerald O'Hanrahan - Wikipedia

4thbabynamehelp · 04/12/2025 08:57

Interesting there are a few famous Emeralds, I wasn't aware of any!

That's why we're here, @4thbabynamehelp . As much as we ae pilloried for our bluntness, our contribution is probably better than the 'Awww, gorgeous name' comments you get.

(Ms Fennell says it as Fen-elle not like the green vegetable/herb.)

IMO, it stands out as the best on your list.

Im irish and Emerald is actually growing on me!! 😂 I really like the idea of a girl called Emmy, short for Emerald. It’s got a fun cool edge to it 😅

😃 I had a conversation last night about names with DH (he's the one that's Irish) and he said 'you know I'm just not sure we can go Emerald' he was kind of laughing, he's quite light hearted about the whole thing, but he said his Irish friends/family will notice the link and find it amusing. He's also concerned it's a bit 'American trying to be Irish' and said it in an American accent, and that if he wasn't Irish it wouldn't be an issue.
So we are definitely on the fence on that one.
He loves Saoirse and Orla or Fiadh, but worries Fiadh might sound like Thea for people who can't say ' 'th' in England.
We are a bit stuck. Comments have been really helpful so far. Early scan looks like it's a girl (if nub theory is in any way reliable!)

Ultimately he will let me choose as he knows I like names so much. But I like him to be on board. He doesn't like Esme at all. He would tolerate Pearl or Scarlett. We have very different taste in names! He suggested Grace, which doesn't do anything for me.
