Having a boy in Feb and need help narrowing our short list down, we're at a complete impasse:
Theodore
Jacob
Nathaniel
Tobias
Nicholas
George
Finley
Robin

Middle name will be Alexander.

I really like Jacob and Nathaniel. Well known classic names but not overly popular.

Finley , George and Theodore have been very popular in recent years, although nice. So I would avoid those. Don't like Tobias, as I just find 'Toby' quite twee.

Calliopespa · 28/11/2025 00:15

Nicholas and Tobias are my favourites.

Someone will come and say Nicholas will get called Knicker-less, which is probably true. I still like it as a name.

Not fond of Tobin, but Tobias I do like.

HartleyH11 · 28/11/2025 00:24

It depends to some degree on how popular you want the name to be.

Jacob has been massively overused in my experience. It is the only name that was duplicated in nursery and Reception where my DS attends. it feels like it is the Dave/John/Paul type of name for the younger generation.

I’m put off Theo and Finn as I know 2 horrors with those names but that’s irrelevant to you!

Cinai · 28/11/2025 00:25

These are great! I’d cut George for being too popular and mainstream (your other names are more interesting). Faves are Nicholas and Finlay.

ForFunGoose · 28/11/2025 00:26

Theo
Tobias
Nicholas
Robin

Love all these, good luck.

What will babies surname start with as having A as a middle name could create a 3 letter word you want to avoid?

E.g
Finlay Alexander Green (Prefer that sp. to Finley)
Nathaniel Alexander Dickson
Robin Alexander Thomson

Came here to say this.

Always have to be careful if using 'A' to start the middle name.

Although saying that, I went to school with Samuel nn Sam and his initials were SAM which was pretty cool!

gillybombilly · 28/11/2025 00:35

Love Tobias and Jacob.

IndigoIsMyFavouriteColour · 28/11/2025 00:37

I really like Tobias, it was on our shortlist! Happy choosing OP

Alexandrine · 28/11/2025 01:14

Nathaniel is a stunner that is quite underused considering it feels like a timeless classic imo, so it would be my pick.

Nicholas is another classic, albeit one that falls in and out of fashion. I like that it has a nice variety of nickname choices - Nico and Cole in particular seem quite cool.

And if you want something a little more popular (so that there should never be any spelling issues and he’ll be easily able to get stuff in shops with his name on 🤣), then Jacob is pretty much a “can’t go wrong” type of name imo.

I don’t really dislike any of your choices though - apart from trendy Finley (surname names aren’t my style) and Theodore which feels like the boys name of the 2020’s (Theodore/Theo/Ted/Teddy seem to be everywhere).

Kippykangarooo · 28/11/2025 01:30

Jacob Alexander is lovely. ❤️

danascully96 · 28/11/2025 01:51

Nicholas, George, and Robin are my favorites!

BoleynMemories13 · 28/11/2025 06:18

I think you have to consider nn potential, and what you'd be happy with.

For example, I adore Jacob but wouldn't use it personally as I'm not keen on Jake. I like Theo, but dislike the full Theodore which I find quite wet. I like both Finley and Finn (although out of the two I think I'd just go for Finn, which is a great stand alone name in it's own right).

George is a solid name.

The only one I really dislike is Tobias, as neither the full name or the short form Toby are for me.

How do you feel about all the potential nicknames and short forms? That might help you to narrow it down.

user1492757084 · 28/11/2025 07:47

So you both love all names.
It's personal taste.

You and DH could each rank them and cut off the last two on each other's list.

Which sounds best with your surname?

My favourites are George, Nicholas, Jacob and Toby.

Peternell · 28/11/2025 08:09

The standouts for me are Nicholas and Tobias. Classic and not over-used. I also love George. The others are fine but there are a lot of them around. I was just catching up with some friends today and we laughed at 3 of them having little grandsons called Finlay!
The only one I'm not keen on is Robin.

bridgetreilly · 28/11/2025 08:43

Robin.

And I miss all the Sams of my youth!

theunbreakablecleopatrajones · 28/11/2025 08:49

Nice list

I'd get shot of Theodore, George and Finley because they've all been done to death for a while, plus Robin as its newly v popular for boys and girls.

Of the rest I'd personally go for Nicholas as it's underused right now, and a great name.

I also like Jacob and Nathaniel - they are both fairly popular - Jacob for a couple of decades, whereas Nathaniel is a name of the moment, so maybe Jacob as second choice, Nathaniel as third.

I love Tobias, but the chances are he'll be Toby which I find a bit wet. Like Nathaniel it's become moderately popular recently.

CheeseIsMyIdol · 28/11/2025 09:16

Nathaniel is the best. Nicholas is nice, too.

Don like Tobias or Finn at all.

CandyCaneKisses · 28/11/2025 09:18

George or Finley

muddyford · 28/11/2025 09:20

Love Nicholas. The rhythm of Nicholas Alexander is wonderful.

BatsInHibernation · 28/11/2025 09:24

Theodore
Jacob
Nathaniel
Tobias
Nicholas
George
Finley
Robin

Nothing wrong with any of these names imo

But, my favourites are, in order

Robin
Nicholas
Tobias
Nathaniel

Love all four of these

Mischance · 28/11/2025 09:27

I would ditch Finley

dontforgetme · 28/11/2025 09:31

From your list I love Nathaniel and George. I’m not keen on Nathan as a nm but really like Nath. Finley and Theo would be a big no from me due to knowing a dozen of each.
