That could be pronounced so many different ways…

Silverbirchleaf · 18/11/2025 06:43

I’ll be honest and not heard of either name.

Aila I would presume was Isla.

Misread Meave as Mauve at first. Is it pronounced Mee-ve?

GoodVibesHere · 18/11/2025 07:10

I would have no idea how to pronounce either of those names.

MrsMitford3 · 18/11/2025 07:11

Is it All-ya Meeve?

Calliopespa · 18/11/2025 09:20

Is this effectively Isla Maeve?

Emanwenym · 18/11/2025 10:03

I'm not familiar with Aila, but it makes me think of 'Ailing' and 'Fail', and it's a bit samey with all the Avas, Adas and Islas.
Shouldn't Meave be Maeve?

I think there are nicer and more distinct names you could choose.
How about Ailsa Maeve?

Lovely - thanks for the update 🥰

ninjahamster · 18/11/2025 15:09

Meave? Or Maeve?

RecordBreakers · 18/11/2025 16:14

Are you asking for opinions about your choice?
Or making some sort of announcement which seems a bit unusual as MN is anonymous ? As people are likely to comment on the name - not always favourably - which you probably will be upset by if you've already named your dc.

Emanwenym · 18/11/2025 16:18

@RecordBreakers ,OP has another thread Baby girl names | Mumsnet

RecordBreakers · 18/11/2025 16:48

Thanks @Emanwenym

It would have been more sensible to have let people on that thread know, if you wanted to, rather than starting a new thread @Marinfamily4 , which people will see in Active threads without having seen your original thread.

Aila - Isla

Aila - Isla

Why not just use Isla then? There is an Ayla in my daughter’s class, Ay rhyming with May. Your second name sounds like Meeve but do you mean Maeve pronounced Mave? You seemed to be asking for opinions by posting on a forum, so I’m just letting you know there could be confusion with the pronunciation!

I thought the Meave was a typo but when I looked it up, it is an alternative spelling.

RecordBreakers · 19/11/2025 22:46

Marinfamily4 · 19/11/2025 05:50

Aila - Isla

I would read 'Aila' as

Ale - ah. Ale to rhyme with Rail / Hail / Fail

But Isla is pronounced

Eye- lah

mathanxiety · 20/11/2025 02:21

Marinfamily4 · 19/11/2025 05:50

Aila - Isla

I think Isla is a much better known spelling and therefore the pronunciation is much clearer. Aila could be pronounced ail-a.

And Maeve is how you spell the middle name, not Meave.

mathanxiety · 20/11/2025 02:25

Calliopespa · 19/11/2025 08:50

It's not an alternative spelling.

Meabh with a fada on the E is the alternative, Irish language spelling. The fada gives the E a long A sound.

The name is Anglicized as Maeve. That is the only authentic Anglicisation.

nellietheellie75 · 20/11/2025 02:32

Both names look like you can't spell and guessed the names- doesn't make you 'unique'. Isla Maeve or Ayla Maeve would be 100 times better.

Emanwenym · 20/11/2025 10:02

Aila in Welsh reads as Isla, so Aila Mif/Mef might work, @Marinfamily4 .

RecordBreakers · 20/11/2025 16:39

That's interesting Emanwenym .
Although I can't help thinking if the OP were living in a Welsh speaking part of Wales, she would probably have mentioned it.

Emanwenym · 20/11/2025 18:28

I doubt that she is, or she'd have picked the dreadful welshified middle name. Smile

RuthW · 20/11/2025 21:22

If you want Isla, call her Isla. Aila is said ale-ah

Possiges · 22/11/2025 10:31

I would assume Aila is pronounced to rhyme with Failure.

Emanwenym · 22/11/2025 10:35

@Possiges , it doesn't but it's not far off.

Firebird83 · 22/11/2025 18:54

Please spell the middle name Maeve
