Harris…for a girl?

AIBU?

I misheard the name “Karis” a few weeks ago and thought, ‘Harris as a girl’s name, how cool.’

I’ve done some superficial research and it seems that Harris is mostly used a boy’s first name, if at all, as it is a surname, really.

But I think it’s very fresh and cosmopolitan, and I like the unisex vibe.

What comes to mind when you think of a girl called Harris? Thoughts welcome!

It’s a boy name .

I quite like it! Even shortened to Harry it’s cute for a girl.
And for the people saying that it’s daft, made up or a surname even for a boy, there are thousands of boys called Harris in Scotland.

The world is your oyster when naming your child, and you’d name your daughter ’Harry’.

I agree! I know 2 girls called Karis (5 and 14 years old) and there were a few in my school years (South London)

Sorry haven't got time to rtft but if nobody's said it already ... Carys (pronounced Karris) is a very popular name where I am in South Wales. Would be considered quite a boring choice here. Just fyi really 😁

No worse than all the girls named Frankie, Charley or Billie.

My immediate thought was Rolf Harris, so based on that alone it would be a no from me.

Emanwenym · 17/11/2025 10:08

It's definitely not made up, popular Arabic boys name That's Haris. @Eurovisionwatcherbecauselol

@Needmorelego , In Cockney rhyming slang, "aris" stands for "arse."
Arse rhymes with glass, and "bottle and glass" was shortened to Aristotle, and that got shortened to "Aris".

@ImisstheQueen , it's been mentioned, and it's the name of many women who are about 60 and are married to or have a brother called Dylan or Gareth. Smile

Needmorelego · 17/11/2025 10:24

@Emanwenym Cockney rhyming slang is brilliant 😂
To be honest I have never heard 'arris as a word for arse before this thread.
It's interesting because despite growing up nowhere near East London I've always known "syrup" (for wig) 😂
I had a teacher at school that allegedly wore a wig and we would often make jokes about her "syrup" being on wonky.

😁looks like its an almost unanimous no

I don’t normally like these different names but I quite like Harris for a girl. I think I’m in the minority though

Needmorelego · 17/11/2025 10:26

@Emanwenym I remember Carys being popular about 15 or so years ago but I can't remember why.
Character in a telly show maybe 🤔

What about Maris? If you like the general sound of the name.

Not Harris.

As in Maris Piper?

As in Maris Piper?

I always think of the character in Frasier on TV.
Spoken of....but never actually seen.
