Harris…for a girl?

AIBU?

I misheard the name “Karis” a few weeks ago and thought, ‘Harris as a girl’s name, how cool.’

I’ve done some superficial research and it seems that Harris is mostly used a boy’s first name, if at all, as it is a surname, really.

But I think it’s very fresh and cosmopolitan, and I like the unisex vibe.

What comes to mind when you think of a girl called Harris? Thoughts welcome!

Harris is a surname, like mo Harris off Eastenders! Terrible name for boy or girl

Too close to arris I.e. arse

I thought that too 🤣🤣

Emmz1510 · 16/11/2025 18:29

I quite like it! Even shortened to Harry it’s cute for a girl.
And for the people saying that it’s daft, made up or a surname even for a boy, there are thousands of boys called Harris in Scotland.

CelestialCandyfloss · 16/11/2025 18:31

No because your 'Arris is your arse 😬

Wicked123 · 16/11/2025 18:32

There’s so many pretty girls names out there and you’d want to name a girl Harris 😩

Emmz1510 · 16/11/2025 18:33

WhatATimeToBeAlive · 15/11/2025 09:41

And a surname.

For a start, there are plenty of boys in Scotland who have Harris as a first name, it’s very popular.
And even it were traditionally a surname, plenty of surnames are finding popularity as first names. Think of Jackson, Hudson, Cooper, Harrison (also very popular in Scotland), Mason, Harper, Cameron…….

Kittyloulou · 16/11/2025 18:35

Nope

Partypants83 · 16/11/2025 18:42

3beastiesandme · 16/11/2025 20:03

Case in point > BOYS called Harris. Not girl... It's bloody awful for a girl!

And yes, as has been said, it's slang for ARSE!

(And are there really THOUSANDS of boys called Harris in Scotland?)

Outrageous 😂
(I'm joking...🙂 I actually preferred American books like Sweet Valley)

Manthide · 16/11/2025 21:32

My neice is called Haris, it is a girl's name in Greece. It is normally spelt Charis in English and means charm or grace.

Manthide · 16/11/2025 21:37

Puzzledfrazzled1 · 15/11/2025 22:38

It is a Greek female name and it actually means someone with elegance.

My Greek niece is called Haris but normally it is translated into Charis in English.

AlwaysRightISwear · 16/11/2025 22:37

Just no.

Pryceosh1987 · 17/11/2025 00:38

Harrisa.

Still not getting that rhyming slang thing 😂
'Arris still doesn't rhyme.
Oh well.

You just don't understand cockney rhyming slang, and that's OK.
Arse was the first thing I thought of. DH family cockneys and often accusing each other of sitting on their 'arris all day 😂

SnowFrogJelly · 17/11/2025 00:48

Noooooooo

CluelessAboutBiology · 15/11/2025 19:54

Shirley Crabtree (Big Daddy)
Marion Morrison (John Wayne)
Tracy Marrow (Ice-T)

My neighbour (England) was a 60ish yr old man called Tracey. We used to call him "Boy Tracey" after the Chewing Gum character of the same name 😂

Italiangreyhound · 17/11/2025 01:36

Not keen. Sorry.

Personally, I'd go for Lois if you like 's' sound at the end, or maybe Agnes, Iris, Artemis, or Alice.

Or Harriet, shortened to Harris so she had an option to for the full name if she wanted.

I'm not a fan of unisex names, having worked alongside quite a few folks with unisex names it is usually an email etc before you meet them and you don't know if they are male or female.

Hollybobs1 · 17/11/2025 07:05

I'd think you hated your own child...
