Stuck between Oscar and Sebastian… which do you prefer and why?

My Husband and I are expecting a baby boy in April and we’ve narrowed it down to two names we really love: Oscar and Sebastian

We’re completely torn. I’d love to hear what vibes each name gives you, and which one you think fits better with our last name (Diesel)

Thanks so much for helping us decide — we keep going back and forth.

They are my two favourite boys names too! I chose Oscar for our boy, he is now 20 years old and we still love the name (as does he) but perhaps Sebastian goes better with your surname?

Humphreyhen · 29/10/2025 10:49

When it comes to nicknames, Oz Diesel sounds cooler than Seb Diesel 😎

Elephantangel1991 · 29/10/2025 10:55

Both very popular names round here. I'd go Oscar Sebastian as i don't like Seb so Sebastian, whilst lovely as a full name, is firmly in middle name category for me.

LadyDanburysHat · 29/10/2025 10:56

Sebastian, a lovely underused name. There are far too many Oscars already.

GardenGaff · 29/10/2025 10:58

Ozzy Diesel is a cool rock star name.

Katherine278 · 29/10/2025 11:52

I love Seb but not Sebastian so for that reason I’d pick Oscar.

34ransum · 29/10/2025 11:55

Oscar nn Ozzy. Seems more fun and suitable for a boy/man at any age

Calliopespa · 29/10/2025 11:55

mumzof4x · 29/10/2025 10:21

Both lovely names
I think Sebastian for me as also love what many will and do shorten it to… Seb

Does no-one else hear things like sebaceous cyst or seborrheic wart/ seborrheic dermatitis in Seb?

I met a very pimply one and could think of nothing else.

LeavesTrees · 29/10/2025 11:58

Sebastian. To me it just sounds more classy. It’s a name that can be shortened to Seb if he wishes and is future proof because it suits any type of job he has in the future IYSWIM.

Oscar to me is quite bland and doesn’t really suit a man, I just picture a young teenage boy when I hear the name.

DryIce · 29/10/2025 12:01

Like both but prefer Sebastian with your surname!

Be careful of the initials.

STD

Oscar and Sebastian are both handsome names.

NecklessMumster · 29/10/2025 12:21

Sebastian....reminds me of the Steve Harley song

muddyford · 29/10/2025 14:00

Sebastian. I know several dogs called Oscar.

Yamamm · 29/10/2025 14:14

I think the loose rule for a two syllable surname is a one or three syllable given name. For flow. So John Diesel. Christopher Diesel. Not Michael Diesel.

John Diesel is so cool!

Squirrelmirrel · 29/10/2025 16:24

Both names have a very different feel. I do quite like Ozzy that comes from Oscar but I've really gone off Oscar which is strange as 10 years ago it was on my list for DS1. I think it became a bit too popular and now I've known lots of dogs that are Oscar. For me it kind of suffered the same fate as Bella in that sense.
Sebastien is more serious, I really like Seb, I think it's quite cool.

Gilmoregirl21 · 31/10/2025 09:12

Sebastian definitely! It was top of my list but I couldn't get my husband to agree! He'd have been Sebastian Oliver, or Sebby for short. So cute 🥰

timoteigirl · 01/11/2025 09:05

Sebastian. Classic beautiful name.

Oscar. Wilde. Our dog. Doesn't sound as good as S.

captainoctopus · 01/11/2025 09:15

Thank goodness I was a girl... if I'd been a boy my parents were going to name me Roger Sebastian.

(Sebastian on its own would have been OK 🙂- though I prefer Sylvester).

MasterBeth · 01/11/2025 10:29

Sebastian Diesel is a storybook name.

LivingTheDreamish · 01/11/2025 19:52

Fab surname! I prefer Sebastian I think. Oscar always makes me think of "the Oscars" and it puts me off the name. Also Oscar + Diesel kind of flow into each other when said together.

Star965 · 02/11/2025 03:37

Both names are lovely. I think Sebastian goes better with your surname.

TappyGilmore · 02/11/2025 03:43

Both very popular names and I always prefer something a bit more unusual, so I’d probably say Sebastian just on the basis that it’s slightly less popular.

Seb Diesel actually sounds quite cool!

Marmalade71 · 02/11/2025 09:52

Sebastian definitely

TheJessops · 03/11/2025 12:59

I always loved the way Sarah Michelle Gellar says Sebastian in Cruel Intentions. And have loved the name ever since! I also like it in an English accent.

Oscar is perfectly lovely name, but a bit boring and common. Also Diesel is a cool surname but Oscar Diesel sounds like you are getting the phonetic alphabet wrong.

Advocodo · 04/11/2025 11:30

Both lovely name but prefer Sebastian and Sebi for short.
