Elise vs Lovisa??

Hi,
We are choosing between these two names... which one is prettier? 💕

I have learned that there is a jewellery shop called "Lovisa" - does this ruin the name?, which otherwise is an old Swedish name.

*we have Scandi heritage, hence the slightly unusual names...

I was coming on to say Lovisa is a shop. Please don't name your child that. What about Louisa or Eloise?

magicscares · 29/09/2025 12:31

I immediately thought of the shop seeing Lovisa.

Elise 🫶

Picoloangel · 29/09/2025 12:31

Lovisa. No. The shop is an upmarket version of Claire’s and catnip to teens. I’d go with Elise which is lovely.

TheNightingalesStarling · 29/09/2025 12:35

I presumed you mistyped Louisa. In the UK, she would be constantly correcting.

However it is a shame when people avoid using their own cultures names just to avoid confusion

MessyToast · 29/09/2025 12:36

Definitely Elise, but maybe that's because I have one!

ninjahamster · 29/09/2025 12:37

Never heard of the shop Lovisa. I think it is a lovely name.

SixtyTwoPercent · 29/09/2025 12:38

Lovisa sounds clunky to me.

Elise is gorgeous.

pamshortsbrokenbothherlegs · 29/09/2025 12:40

Is this still as a middle name for Agnes, OP? I hope you haven't let people put you off that - it's so gorgeous! If I'd had a second d DD she'd have been Agnes.

I like Elise better as a mn but honestly both are really nice. If you're swerving on a first name, Lovisa.

RoverReturn · 29/09/2025 12:49

The jewellery shop does ruin the name imo. Its a cheap n tacky shop!

Comefromaway · 29/09/2025 12:50

I too immediately thought of the shop.

Coffeeishot · 29/09/2025 12:51

Elise is better than Louvisa do you pronounce the V? These shops are popping up everywhere I wouldn't personally.

Comefromaway · 29/09/2025 12:51

ninjahamster · 29/09/2025 12:37

Never heard of the shop Lovisa. I think it is a lovely name.

Do you have a tween/teenage daughter? It's for when you grow out of Claire's!

Selttan · 29/09/2025 12:55

Yeah with Lovisa I automatically think jewellery.
What about sort of combining the two and doing Elisa.

Coffeeishot · 29/09/2025 12:57

We have just got a shop in our town centre i hadn't heard of it before.

DuchessOfNarcissex · 29/09/2025 12:59

This is one of several threads by the username. OP is, I think, Swedish.
The names in the poll are for a middle name.
Lovisa is Swedish for Louise.

I'd compromise and use Louise.

Algen · 29/09/2025 13:01

I wouldn’t use Lovisa for a first name in the UK but think it would be fine as a middle name.

I prefer Elise, though, even without the shop connotation for Lovisa.

PurpleChrayn · 29/09/2025 14:28

They both sound like brands of oral contraceptive but Elise is marginally better.

Leavesfalling · 29/09/2025 14:30

Lovisa sounds like a type of bread
And an Elise is a car

So neither that pretty, per se?

Notagain75 · 29/09/2025 14:39

I've never heard of the shop Lovisa.
I don't think it should put your off if it reflects your heritage and you like it. Presumably it was a name before it was a shop
Also there are plenty of Claires around.
Having said that Elise is also nice

Smartiepants79 · 29/09/2025 14:43

If it’s spelt Lovisa. I wouldn’t choose it for a child growing up in England right now. Louvisa is better and it is pretty.

CarpetKnees · 29/09/2025 14:53

I would expect Swedish people to use Swedish names, same as people from any country who happen to be living elsewhere for a while.

However I agree with others that, because, written down, Lovisa looks very similar to Louisa, I think that will create a lot of confusion is she is growing up in the UK, or other English speaking countries.
So, for that reason, I'd choose Elise from the two.

MalinandGo · 29/09/2025 14:57

My feeling is that a Lovisa would live with people thinking it was Louisa misspelt unfortunately, or just misread it. I think you're safer with Elise.

DenizenOfAisleOfShame · 29/09/2025 15:01

Lovisa?

Possibly, but definitely not if the surname is ‘Battlefield’.

In any event, best avoided I think.

DuchessOfNarcissex · 29/09/2025 15:15

@DenizenOfAisleOfShame , It's pronounced a bit like Louisa, and it's a proposed middle name. The surname isn't Slagfält Smile

Trodincatsickagain · 29/09/2025 15:54

I have an Elisa, she’s neither a shop, car or form of contraception but we have called her Elise for most of her life, only Elisa when naughty 😄 Elise just rolls off the tongue so beautifully.
