Thinking of this for my baby girl but wondering if it’s perceived as more for a boy ?

Cinaferna · 15/09/2025 11:23

I only know boys called Ellis. Elise for a girl, maybe?

Songlines · 15/09/2025 11:24

All the Ellis's I know are girls/women. Mainly in their 30s

Luxio · 15/09/2025 11:26

It predominantly a boys name, I've taught several and none so far have been girls. The only female Ellis I can think of is Ellis Grey from Grey's anatomy.

Emanwenym · 15/09/2025 11:45

There are so many Ellies, Ellas and other El- names around. Why not give her a girl's name that doesn't sound samey.

Ellis was my maiden name. I also used to babysit a girl down the street when I was a teenager called Ellis.

Boy

Welltower · 15/09/2025 12:12

Girls name. Boys name is Elliott

Cocktailsandcheese · 15/09/2025 12:14

I know 2 females and one male called Ellis

housemaus · 15/09/2025 12:17

I know 3 girls called Ellis, all in their early 30s, although I would have traditionally called it a boy's name.

Emanwenym · 15/09/2025 12:22

@Welltower , Girls name. Boys name is Elliott
Ellis and Elliot aren't connected. Both are surnames, and both are predominantly boys' names.

Indeed and funnily enough there weren't actually that many more girls called Ellis in 2024 compared to girls called Elliott in 2024 according to the link up thread.

@Emanwenym That’s a good point about all El sounding names at the moment.

It’s nice enough but I’ve personally only met boys called Ellis. I think if you called a girl Ellis then people might also mishear it as “Alice?” or “Elise?” (as people tend to gravitate to what they are familiar with). To be fair though, that happens with lots of less commonplace names.

Ellis for a boy

Alice for a girl
Elise for a girl

Moreteaandchocolate · 15/09/2025 13:26

I’ve only ever heard it for a boy. Alice sounds similar if you like that?

Blushingm · 15/09/2025 13:36

I know both girls & boys with the name Ellis

MaloryJones · 15/09/2025 13:37

It's a surname

Coffeeishot · 15/09/2025 13:40

I know both, and they are in their late 20s early 30s,

It is a nice name use it, it isn't like you are calling her John or whatever.

CurlewKate · 15/09/2025 13:43

It’s a boy’s name. There are loads of lovely girl’s names you can use.

tinytemper66 · 15/09/2025 13:44

Have taught both with the name Ellis.

JDM625 · 15/09/2025 13:56

Ellis- boy

Elise/Elisse- Girl. I went to school with a girl and it was spelt Elisse. Pronounced Ell-eese.

Ellis for a boy

Alice for a girl
Elise for a girl

This is how I've always thought of it.

And the funny thing is, I LOVE Alice as a name, but really don't like Ellis at all.

It suddenly shifts it to names like Madison, Brooklyn and Iowa because of Ellis Island. Totally different vibe.

I like poster suggestions of Elise.
