Thinking of this for my baby girl but wondering if it’s perceived as more for a boy ?

@Emanwenym That’s amazing!

I think it’s more usually a boy’s name but not completely out there as a girl’s name.

If you like it, use it!

Definitely think of it as a boy’s name (and a fairly common surname here in Wales).
Ellis for a girl is more American because of Grey’s anatomy

Emanwenym · 15/09/2025 17:32

I think it works out as of all girls' names registered 2% of the names start with El.

I missed a few: Elaiyah
Elani
Elarah
Elay
Eleanor-Louise
Eleftheria
Elena-Rose
Elenor
Eleyna
Eliana-Rose
Elianne
Elidi
Eliona
Elisheba
Elivia
Eliyannah
Elizabella
Elizabeth-May
Elke
Ella-Noor
Ellana
Ellanoor
Ellie-Anne
Ellie-Louise
Ellie-Marie
Ellieanna
Elliw (Welsh - the LL is not 2 Ls)
Ellodie
Ellory
Eloise-Grace
Elora-Mae
Elsey
Elsie-Jayne
Elswyth
Elvana
Elwynn
Elys

Elyse?

Tam285 · 15/09/2025 17:37

Boys name. I really like it as a boys name but don't like it at all for a girl.

CharlieUniformNovemberTango2023 · 15/09/2025 17:40

I know both sexes with the name ellis. Its my husbands middle name.

TimetoGetUpNow · 15/09/2025 17:41

Boys name.

If I heard you call out Ellis for a girl I might think you were a New Zealander and her name was Alice.

Confusedmermaid1 · 15/09/2025 17:42

I know a girl Ellis in real life (and obviously Ellis Grey from greys anatomy 😅) but I do know more boys named Ellis.

Vaguelyclassical · 15/09/2025 20:15

It's (gasp) androgynous these days just because of free floating deployment across both sexes. And really rather boring.
Although back in the day, Emily Bronte, needing a masculine pen name when she published Wuthering Heights, called herself Ellis Bell as I recall!

EvelynBeatrice · 15/09/2025 20:20

I love it. Lovely name. I have known both a man and two women with the name.

NatalieH2220 · 15/09/2025 20:23

I know a boy and girl called Ellis.
I think it sounds like more of a boys name

RuthW · 15/09/2025 20:24

I know male and female Ellis.

Dqdaa · 15/09/2025 20:26

I know one of each - both early 30s. The girl is spelt Ellice though. I would lean more to a boys name

roshi42 · 15/09/2025 21:11

I know a recent boy baby Ellis and Ellis Genge the men’s England rugby player. So I think of it first as a male name. Think it’s quite cool for a girl though.

Notagain75 · 15/09/2025 21:14

It's a boy's name

zebrastripesarefun · 15/09/2025 21:24

It’s my family surname but is gender neutral. I know boys and girls called Ellis

Bournetilly · 15/09/2025 21:25

I prefer it for a girl than boy, it’s a nice name but I do think the El names are too common.

Catcatcat111 · 15/09/2025 21:29

I only know boys called Ellis.

Onthefarsideoftheworld · 15/09/2025 21:34

Thank you all ..interesting to hear your views.

I know 2 grown women called Ellis and two baby boys called Ellis! I prefer it for a Girl

It predominantly a boys name, I've taught several and none so far have been girls. The only female Ellis I can think of is Ellis Grey from Grey's anatomy.

I agree with this.
Ellis Grey, mother of Meredith Grey, is the only female Ellis I know about.

In my Scandinavian home country, it's "Elise" for a girl, "Elis" for a boy.

I think it's quite a pleasant name but all the El names seem to blur into each other.

How about Alys (old spelling variant for Alice)?
