Is Tristan posh?

Just that really!

i think it's a nice, middle ground name. Not too wacky/out there, but also not too pretentious.

I've just watched a TV show with a very posh Tristan in it, and now I'm wondering!

I was going to call my DD Tristian if she had been a boy. Stardust being my favourite movie.

If you like the name, go for it.

Quentin isn't mainstream.
The choosing a name that fits with your lifestyle or aspirations isn't outdated. It is an opinion. People are allowed opinions.

I DO think that the concept that names being linked to a certain class very outdated! Anyone can use a name like Rupert, Hugo, Quentin or Sebastian nowadays. It is no longer the preserve of certain classes. Why should it be?

Poirot1983 · 17/09/2025 16:52

It's a handsome name.

HugoYorway · 17/09/2025 17:07

@Bluelilacbella , anyone can use any name they like, but you might want the child to fit in with their friends. If the friends have quite ordinary names, you might decide on a similar sort of name, regardless of preferring something like Eurydice and Hereward, or Tyler-Jay and Skyla-Belle.

@HugoYorway I don’t know about the aristocracy but I do think even the UMC are loosening up a bit with names. Maybe not to the extent of using names like Teddy-Jay but if you look at the Telegraph birth announcements there are names like Freddie (as a given name - no full version), Charlie, Finley, Rafferty, Connor etc. Although quite a lot of Clementines as well tbf!

HugoYorway · 17/09/2025 17:25

@yonem, are they UMC? I know some who had announcements and they are MC but not UMC. Their children (or grandchildren) had very ordinary names.

Do you honestly think friends of Tyler Jay or Rupert really care about their mates’ names? Do you really think they will ‘not fit in’ ???

I think some adults on Mumsnet are way more narrow minded than most youngsters nowadays.

justkeepgoingpeople · 17/09/2025 17:26

Yes and not in a good way

How on earth do you differentiate between UMC and MC???

RuthW · 17/09/2025 17:36

Not posh. Nice name but I really struggle to say it.

HugoYorway · 17/09/2025 17:37

Yes, they will care. Their parents will care. Teachers will care.
Some names are a bit 'What were the parents thinking?'. Quentin is one. 24 registered in a year is not mainstream.

Some of the names of my acquaintances gave their children are unusual as in unique.

A name that is used 24 times is really not that unusual…. Plus there’s the well known Quentin Blake and Quentin Tarantino that I doubt anyone would think “wow how unusual, what were the parents thinking”

Why would parents and teachers care? Surely they’d be happy to have less duplicate names like Theo or Alfie in their class.

Calliopespa · 17/09/2025 17:54

I quite like Quentin.

Quentin is fucking hideous IMO, and when there are around 600,000 births in one year, 24 is very little.

Tristan I've always liked. I went to school with one who wasn't at all posh. It is considered a bit of a posh name but it wouldn't put me off using it.

HugoYorway · 17/09/2025 18:06

That is your opinion @Bluelilacbella. It is not mine. Quentin has negative associations.

Why do teachers care - some names don't suggest that the child will be an ideal pupil.

Why do parents care? Because they want their children to mix with children whose parents have the same sort of values as their own.

Why do people care? Because they gravitate towards the same sort of people as themselves.

HugoYorway · 17/09/2025 18:08

@Tam285 , you put my thoughts into words. Grin

I know two Quentins (one in primary, one early 20s) and both are lovely normal boys, from lovely friendly families (one of which is originally French).

Theres also the lovely children’s illustrator Quentin Blake that most children will have heard of.

Still don’t understand the negative associations…?

Tristan could be associated with sadnesss due to triste meaning sad, but i don’t see any strong associations with Quentin (other than Blake or Tarantino l)

Samsonsund · 20/10/2025 01:01

My first thought was Andrew tates brother.

wouldnt say it was posh at all
