Is Tristan posh?

Just that really!

i think it's a nice, middle ground name. Not too wacky/out there, but also not too pretentious.

I've just watched a TV show with a very posh Tristan in it, and now I'm wondering!

Reminds me of George and Mildred's neighbours kid..70s sitcom.
As younger poster's might not have heard of it for obvious reasons.

PistachioTiramisu · 13/09/2025 08:54

Love the name, and so what if it is labelled 'posh'? Is posh so wrong?

NoArmaniNoPunani · 13/09/2025 08:54

The only one I know has been in and out of prison

ResusciAnnie · 13/09/2025 08:54

IMO yes but the only one I’ve known IRL was from a poor family.

Also met a Tristram which is even posher IMO. And a Crispin. I cannot bear when people go by ‘Tris’… so prim!

HugoYorway · 13/09/2025 08:55

@CurlewKate , They were, but what sort of parents would choose those names specifically? Why not Wotan?

HugoYorway · 13/09/2025 08:56

@Gladysknightjustwalkinmyshoes , he was Tristram.

@Gladysknightjustwalkinmyshoes , he was Tristram.

I stand corrected,thank you 👍😁

His baby brother was Tarquin.

This!

Thankfully we all have different tastes and it makes life more interesting! Why discourage parents from choosing a name they love, just because some people consider it ‘posh’…?

Shouldn’t we all be a little more open minded?

HugoYorway · 13/09/2025 09:10

@Bluelilacbella , for the same reason as we discourage parents from using a name they love, just because some people consider it completely the opposite.

Siegfried Farnon made a similar point….!

It’s the same the other way round though, if people post a more ‘working-class’ name like Jayden or Lexi or Logan or whatever, lots of replies hating the names purely because of the class they are associated with.
I guess people don’t want a name that suggests too much about social background or class as there can be negative connotations either way. I agree it’s a shame though! Names should just be names.

DiscoBob · 13/09/2025 12:19

I used to know a Tristan and he was quite posh. Sadly it does have a connotation towards the Tate brothers now. Other than that it is a little old fashioned.

Elephantangel1991 · 13/09/2025 13:20

I love the name Tristan! It was vetoed by DH for being too posh. I think it's the most beautiful sound. None of the Tristans I know are particularly posh.

Baby26 · 13/09/2025 13:25

The only one I know is definitely not from a posh family

TaborlinTheGreat · 13/09/2025 13:38

Yes, it is a bit! I really like it.

It's like Hugo.

No it's not! Hugo is very mainstream 😊.
Tristan is posh.

Purplecatshopaholic · 13/09/2025 14:04

I don’t know if it’s considered posh these days, but it’s a lovely name

user1492757084 · 13/09/2025 14:31

No.

I think it used to be.
But I know two children called Tristan and they are both decidedly not posh (mums that vape at school pickup etc)

Funny. Tristan obviously the Kian of our times Grin

I can understand why you might want to avoid a ‘naughty’ or ‘chav’ name (although I hate that description) as it might let employers judge your ‘lower class/uneducated’ background.

However, why would employers turn away a Hugo, Sebastian, Quentin or a Tristan? They’re unlikely to be ‘naughty’ or ‘uneducated’?

I genuinely don’t understand why parents are not encouraged to choose such names (although in reality they are as these names ARE becoming more popular).

HugoYorway · 13/09/2025 15:06

Hugo and Sebastian are in the top 50 boys names. Tristan is declining in popularity and Quentin isn't even in the top 1000.

Purpee · 13/09/2025 15:10

I didn't realise it was considered posh. I only know one and he's from a very Gaelach/Gaelic family in terms of culture and language so I always just assumed it was a Gaelic name.

AuntyBulgaria · 13/09/2025 15:16

To me it's one of the poshest names there is!
