Is Tristan posh?

Just that really!

i think it's a nice, middle ground name. Not too wacky/out there, but also not too pretentious.

I've just watched a TV show with a very posh Tristan in it, and now I'm wondering!

It used to be. The one I know is definitely not posh.

same

arcticpandas · 13/09/2025 03:12

Not posh at all. Very middle class.

JMSA · 13/09/2025 03:14

It’s just a bit wet.

garlictwist · 13/09/2025 05:37

It’s a bit…wet.

CurlewKate · 13/09/2025 06:06

No. It’s the sort of name people who aren’t posh think is posh.

No. It’s the sort of name people who aren’t posh think is posh.

This. It's a social climber name.

Gardenroomdoom · 13/09/2025 06:09

This. It's a social climber name.

It’s also a generic name used for posh people. Tristan, Araminta, Hugo, Persephone….when the poshest people in the country tend to be called James, Sarah- or indeed, George, Charlotte and Louis!

Bluelilacbella · 13/09/2025 07:25

It’s a lovely name. I must like ‘posh’ names!

You’re making assumptions as to why parents choose it. Can you not imagine that they might simply LIKE the name?

Yamamm · 13/09/2025 07:34

I love it but yes I see it as an aspirational name. Bit silly really but naming a child is fraught with these considerations. Doesn’t it mean ‘sad’ though?

Just actually googled and apparently it comes from ‘riot’ but now associated with ‘sad’. That’s what took it off my long list for my son though.

Moreteaandchocolate · 13/09/2025 08:07

I like it, it’s not particularly posh sounding to me, and it’s nice you don’t hear it often.

historyinthemaking · 13/09/2025 08:08

No. That’s the name of the main guy in the movie Stardust and he’s a pauper!

MrsLargeEmbodied · 13/09/2025 08:09

All creatures great and small
and yes it is posh,

MrsLargeEmbodied · 13/09/2025 08:10

or is that Tristram

Lafufufu · 13/09/2025 08:11

Great name.

I know 2 or 3 all perfectly nice.

I dated one as a teen and just LOVED saying "this my boyfriend...Tristan!!!!" 😁

AtomHeartMotherOfGod · 13/09/2025 08:13

It is a bit posh. Agree with link to All Creatures Great and Small, and also Stardust, but to be fair the Tristan in the latter is far more relatable and everyday. And beautiful 😁

Firsttimebabymummy · 13/09/2025 08:18

I wouldn't say so. I really like it.

AutumnalLight · 13/09/2025 08:26

Yes

Bluebay · 13/09/2025 00:19

It's the name of our plumber.

@Bluebay
oh, snap! I have a plumber called Tristan too! He works for LeakBot.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 13/09/2025 08:45

I can't help myself but I always mentally add 'Da Cunha' as in the island Tristan Da Cunha. 🙄

HugoYorway · 13/09/2025 08:46

Not posh.1970s middle class name inspired by a Sunday evening tv series.

CurlewKate · 13/09/2025 08:47

The All Creatures Great and Small characters are named because Wagner, not because Posh.

DemBonesDemBones · 13/09/2025 08:48

Yes, very.

MyAcornWood · 13/09/2025 08:48

I don’t think it’s particularly posh, no. It’s not a Tarquin anyway(!)
I think it’s gaining in popularity, so it’s a bit more of a Ralph/Hugo name; used to be a bit posh but much more widespread now.
I love it, it was on our shortlist for our turned-out-to-be-a-daughter DC2

Absolutely. But this thread is about whether it’s posh or not.
