Hi I’m wanting some help/advice from you lovely ladies. I love reading threads on mumsnet but never actually posted myself. My little girl is is 5 weeks now and we are really struggling with name. I’ve got a little boy already and he’s called Frankie. I love the name Frances and would love to call her Frances Elizabeth however what’s everyone’s thoughts. Are they too similar?? We’ve had quite an extensive list of names but non have stuck. I call her Birdy for short as her little cry is soooo high pitched. Her last name is Browne

These are some of the names we’ve had on the list

Marcella
Matilda
Florence
Hattie
Marnie

Her second name will be Elizabeth after my mums cousin who doesn’t have any children and is the last of her family line. I love it, it feels timeless and I feel that Frances fits perfectly with it but a few people have said Frances is just too similar to Frankie.

You can't rename Birdie now! Love it

mumofoneAloneandwell · 04/09/2025 12:58

I love Lily Elizabeth 💕

I wonder if some of the posts on this site are made up. Frankie and Frances are basically the same name.

Yes, I was a bit puzzled by the idea that "Some people think that" they're too similar when they clearly are objectively extremely similar.

I don't know if the boy's given name actually is Frankie, but traditionally, Frank/Frankie were informal names for boys/men called Francis, which is pronounced almost identical to Frances - so you'd be literally asking "Are Francis and Frances similar?" !

I looked up bird related names on google. amongst the more usual robin, wren, raven etc, I spotted ENARA.- A Basque name meaning swallow.
I think Enara Elizabeth sounds lovely 🤷‍♀️
Otherwise I think Florence/Florrie is quite lovely with Frances.

Enara is lovely!

Sorry I really don’t like Birdie and I’m surprised how many people do! I would hate to be called Birdie!!

I love pretty much all your other name ideas, but agree with pp comments about Frances and Frankie essentially being the same name!

Me too...I think it's awful, tweet tweet!

Marnie or Hattie much nicer!

Needspaceforlego · 04/09/2025 13:39

Op Frances is far too similar to Frankie. They could easily both end up as Fran or she too could end as Frankie or Franny.

Birdy is too nicknamie for me. But I agree it could stick for a while. I had a baby Smurf who still gets called Smurf.

Elizabeth Wren, Robin, would work

user1492757084 · 04/09/2025 13:42

Elizabeth is perfect as a first or second name.
I like Florence, Marcelle, Harriet and Matilda.

My Grandmother had a friend whose nick name was Birdie. Her actual name was Bridget.
Ideas:
Bridie Elizabeth Browne
Elizabeth Matilda Browne
Bridget Elizabeth Browne

We named our baby girl Frida. I think that would go beautifully with Frankie.

Holidayholiday2025 · 05/09/2025 09:47

Birdie is cute as a baby nickname but you, and she will grow out of it.

We called my DD Little Bird when she was a baby as she used to open her mouth like a baby bird when she was hungry. It was very cute and suited her well. Birdie would have been great too.

Now she's at secondary, that's long in the past! I can't imagine calling her something like Little Bird or Birdie now! Just keep that as a cute nickname IMO.

CremeBruhlee · 05/09/2025 13:38

Call her Bridget with Birdie as a NN

Calliopespa · 05/09/2025 13:45

ladycarlotta · 03/09/2025 23:10

I was coming to say the same thing! Birdie is a nn for Elizabeth.

Would Elizabeth Frances work?

Yes I came to say the same thing!

I always think names of the same letter have a kind of Two Ronnies double-act feel to them, and for that reason I think Frances is definitely too close, and probably Florence as well - though I do like Florence.

I really like Hattie (would you go for Harriet/Harriette?) and like Matilda too.

Marnie and Marcella I think have a totally different feel to them, and I'm really not so fond. I also don't feel they sit well with Elizabeth. Marnie makes me think of a marmite sarnie!

Ideas:
Bridie Elizabeth Browne
Elizabeth Matilda Browne
Bridget Elizabeth Browne

But do you like the sound of Bridie Brown or Bridget Browne op? Because it normally won't have the Elizabeth as buffer.

I think Hattie Browne, Matilda Browne or Elizabeth Browne sound better.

Dippythedino · 04/09/2025 05:02

Alice Elizabeth is such a beautiful and classic combination; you can still call her Birdie as a nn. I wouldn't use it as a first name because bird brain comes to mind!

Alternative names:
Adeline
Adrianna
Azalea
Zinnia
Marissa
Lydia
Louisa
Florence
Camilla

wow thank you for replying so quickly

Alice Elizabeth is lovely. I have said it a few times and it just seems to flow

regarding Birdie, I would call her Birdie Elizabeth but my partner thinks it’s wild 😂😂😂not sure if I will be able to convince him.

I thought everyone would say Francis is just too similar. 🙃🙃

Call her Birdie! Birdie Brown is an awesome name!
