Hi I’m wanting some help/advice from you lovely ladies. I love reading threads on mumsnet but never actually posted myself. My little girl is is 5 weeks now and we are really struggling with name. I’ve got a little boy already and he’s called Frankie. I love the name Frances and would love to call her Frances Elizabeth however what’s everyone’s thoughts. Are they too similar?? We’ve had quite an extensive list of names but non have stuck. I call her Birdy for short as her little cry is soooo high pitched. Her last name is Browne

These are some of the names we’ve had on the list

Marcella
Matilda
Florence
Hattie
Marnie

Her second name will be Elizabeth after my mums cousin who doesn’t have any children and is the last of her family line. I love it, it feels timeless and I feel that Frances fits perfectly with it but a few people have said Frances is just too similar to Frankie.

I’m fascinated to know how birdie is nn for Elizabeth. How and why?

birdie is a great name op

Dippythedino · 04/09/2025 05:02

Alice Elizabeth is such a beautiful and classic combination; you can still call her Birdie as a nn. I wouldn't use it as a first name because bird brain comes to mind!

Alternative names:
Adeline
Adrianna
Azalea
Zinnia
Marissa
Lydia
Louisa
Florence
Camilla

TheGrimSmile · 04/09/2025 05:42

It's got to be Elizabeth with Birdie as her nn.

Birdie Browne is just too cute!

Agree

chunkybear · 04/09/2025 05:49

Marcella is very beautiful and probably the most uncommon of all the names youve chosen. I also think Frances is too samey as Frankie

wow thank you for replying so quickly

Alice Elizabeth is lovely. I have said it a few times and it just seems to flow

regarding Birdie, I would call her Birdie Elizabeth but my partner thinks it’s wild 😂😂😂not sure if I will be able to convince him.

I thought everyone would say Francis is just too similar. 🙃🙃

How about Sofia? A beautiful Greek name, that means "wise". Sofia Elizabeth. I like it :)

Sevenh · 04/09/2025 06:12

From your list I like Florence, Matilda then Hattie in that order. Florence is just beautiful.

Not as keen on Frances I’m afraid.

My personal favourite names are Elizabeth and Charlotte (Lottie).

Frankie and Matilda (Tillie) Browne.
Frankie and Lottie Browne
Frankie and Elizabeth (Eliza) Browne
Frankie and Florrie Browne
Frankie and Hattie Browne

(Just experimenting!)

Tbh whatever you call her I suspect she’s now going to be known as Birdie! These names you use when they’re babies often stick.

moose62 · 04/09/2025 06:26

I have a niece called Birdie Elizabeth.....she is 7. No one thinks it is wild, you just get used to any name!

HelloHattie · 04/09/2025 06:34

If you like Birdie what about Wren?

I love Daisy at the moment. I like the idea of getting a lunchbox with daisies on etc but you can’t go wrong with Hattie either.

I like Frances and Frankie together.

It makes me think of the wonderful 'Norman and Norma' by the Divine Comedy!

theunbreakablecleopatrajones · 04/09/2025 08:12

Frances and Frankie are forms of the same name, and sound like it, so don't do do that, it's just odd

Hattie is great if short for Harriet, it's too nicknamey on its own - I'd go for that

Florence works too

Lois might be an option

Oh it's awful - it sounds like something so fragile and insignificant

It's fine as a nick name

Momstermash94 · 04/09/2025 08:19

I actually think Birdie Elizabeth is a beautiful name!

MyTommyGunDont · 04/09/2025 08:20

Birdie and Bertie also sound similar - what about Roberta or Alberta - and Bertie or Birdie would work as nicknames and for me these are a similar vibe to Frances.

Dolphinnoises · 04/09/2025 08:23

Could you call her Bridget and then Birdie for short?

BCBird · 04/09/2025 08:25

Like Connie Elizabeth

cannyvalley · 04/09/2025 08:25

Florence Elizabeth sounds gorgeous. I also love florrie as a short version.

BCBird · 04/09/2025 08:27

Like Connie Elizabeth

ILoveWhales · 04/09/2025 08:54

I know a baby boy Frankie. His sister is Bonnie.

Frankie and Bonnie

WhereYouLeastExpect · 04/09/2025 08:57

Names that are types of birds that I don't think have been mentioned:
Linnet
Mavis (song thrush)
Paloma

Other names that could maybe have Birdie as a nickname:
Bianca
Bettina
Alberta
Bernice
Kimberley
Beverley
Bronwen

Hellohelga · 04/09/2025 09:36

Just stick with Birdie Browne - it’s such a sweet name. And after 5 weeks surely she is a Birdie now.

Moreteaandchocolate · 04/09/2025 11:54

Sorry I really don’t like Birdie and I’m surprised how many people do! I would hate to be called Birdie!!

I love pretty much all your other name ideas, but agree with pp comments about Frances and Frankie essentially being the same name!

I imagine Elizabeth > Betty > Birdie. Maybe with another step in between.
