Kit

How popular is Kit? Is it rising? I love it but don’t want DS to be one of 10 in his class in a few years time.

DD has a unisex but more masculine one syllable first name so looking for some ideas aside from Kit.

We also like Joss but DH isn’t too keen on all the S’s and grammatical errors afoot, nor the similarity to Josh.

More ideas and thoughts would be great. Thanks

There's a couple in my nursery, aged between 1 and 3.

Moreteaandchocolate · 28/08/2025 09:37

I don’t know any Kits (across 3 schools).

Rafe
Nate
Rex
Jules
Finn
Lyle
Reid
Rhys

Just reminds me of the ‘K’ clan belonging to the Rooneys.

BoleynMemories13 · 28/08/2025 10:26

It's just outside the top 100 (as a stand alone name). Rising, but not exceptionally so.

I do really like it but personally I would put Christopher on the birth certificate, as Kit is quite limiting as a stand alone name.

Joss I would assume to be a girl.

Emanwenym · 28/08/2025 11:09

Kit is #157, so not that popular, but he could be one of two or three.
I don't particularly like it but I quite like Joss.

pamshortsbrokenbothherlegs · 28/08/2025 11:17

I love Kit, adore Joss but couldn't get DH on board. Our DS is Rafe and sometimes I think he should have been Rhys, so I think the above list from a PP is spot on. 😅 I'd add Jude too.

Unexpectedlysinglemum · 28/08/2025 11:34

Always makes me think of pe kit , where since I went to school with a now quite famous kit , I remember laughing to myself whenever I hear someone say his silly name!

BarnacleBeasley · 28/08/2025 11:41

I quite like Kit but like a PP I would treat it as a nickname for Christopher. I always think it's nice for the child to have lots of options.

bugalugs45 · 28/08/2025 11:52

Makes me think of knight rider ( showing my age ) . I do know 1 kit though , who is around 9 ,
first time I’d ever heard the name

growinguptobreakingdown · 28/08/2025 11:55

I love Kit and don't know any.
Joss I see as a girls name (Jocelyn), and as a boy would imagine it would get mistaken for Josh.

Norwayway · 28/08/2025 11:55

I know 1

BalladOfBarryAndFreda · 28/08/2025 11:57

I know 3, max age 7.

Go Christopher, nn 'Kit'.

Early3Rise · 28/08/2025 12:37

Rising for sure

Never knew any growing up, now know a few babies/toddlers

Elephantangel1991 · 28/08/2025 17:47

I've never met any round here. It's a great name.

Bluelilacbella · 28/08/2025 19:35

Kit? As in take your kit off?

SeashellDREAMS · 28/08/2025 21:17

I really like the name Kit for Christopher, I like it so much more than Chris which is overused and could be confused as a feminine name short for Christine.
I don't know any boys who have that as a name, so it's definitely rare where I am, but that alone would make it more appealing for me.

JollyGreenSnake · 29/08/2025 20:48

Kat.

Zov · 29/08/2025 20:52

Call him Christopher (officially) and shorten it to Kit.

Gorgeous name (Both of them!) Smile

violetpink · 29/08/2025 20:53

Adore the name Kit

zebrastripesarefun · 29/08/2025 21:35

I know one, as a nickname for Christopher. (Parents introduced baby as Kit, was much later before they told people it was Christopher to make sure they controlled the nickname, not getting Chris).

So when you look at how popular it is, you also have to look at how many Christophers and Christians, all of whom could be Kit. There’s quite a few girls known as Kitty (some called Kitty, some Katherine etc).

It is lovely though, so if you love it, don’t be put off with the idea of another in the class. I named my DS a name that’s officially unusual for his year on the baby name list, really in the low 200s. Primary he was the only one, but at secondary there’s one boy with his first name in his form and another in the year above with the same first and surname. (The boy in the year above with the exact same name does seem to be incapable of looking after any of his stuff as DS keeps being given named things from lost property that are the other boy’s stuff.)

Emanwenym · 30/08/2025 09:18

I know lots of people called Chris. Only one of them is a Christine. The others are Christopher but one is Christian and another is Krzysztof.

I know 2 Kits. One (adult) is Christopher and the other is Kit (child).

AmyDuPlantier · 30/08/2025 09:28

I LOVE Kit but wasn’t able to use it. I don’t know any at all though - it’s often talked about on here but in real life, not so much.

Bitzee · 30/08/2025 09:33

I like Kit. I know one who is 4. Christopher on the birth certificate though. Joss is a girl’s name isn’t it? I’ve only ever heard it as short for Jocelyn.
