I have a Nell, so I’m completely biased but I love it, and that’s obviously my favourite on your list. It’s not short for anything and I think it’s strong enough on its own, far stronger than many ie/y ending girls names that are longer. To me it’s a name with gumption.

We considered Eleanor but in the end I didn’t want her to have a different first initial to the name we actually use day to day.

We gave her a longer middle name in case she wants options when she’s older but she’s only 1, so we haven’t come to any of that yet.

TheeNotoriousPIG · 18/08/2025 22:32

From your list, I like Rosa, Rosalind and Isla. Lillian could grow on me.

I'd assume that Teigan is derived from the Welsh word 'Tegan' (meaning 'toy').

Good look with your little one, OP!

RogueFemale · 18/08/2025 22:39

@Sosososososo
Isla - meh
Alma - the woman in Coronation Street
Rosa - Lemon Pledge
Ruby - meh
Nell - maybe nice as a nickname for a proper name
Rosalind - dull as ditchwater
Romilly - no
Ocean - one of those silly names
Nelly - see Nell
Elowen - trying too hard to be 'different'
Teigan - very USA (not a compliment)
Karenza - ask yourself whether you'd like to be called that
Demelza - ditto
Lillian - anything Lily is overdone these days, and Lillian sounds like a grandmother name
Guinevere - okay-ish

No suggestions as requested, but you really need some.

pottydimley · 18/08/2025 22:53

I’m completely biased but Rosa is my granddaughter’s name and I love it. She’s a teenager now, and it’s suited her at every age, and she has never disliked her name, unlike some young people (including me).

Yokaiwatch · 18/08/2025 23:04

Isla - beautiful, I always think of Islay
Alma - I think of a frumpy old woman, sorry to any Almas
Rosa - I think Rosa parks - it’s nice but prefer Rose
Ruby - I think of the song. It’s ok
Nell - not keen I just don’t like the sound of the name
Rosalind - the first half of the name is good
Romilly - I’m not sure if I like it or not, likely to get milly or romy
Ocean - I like it, more people should be called Ocean
Nelly - see Nell
Elowen - pretty name
Teigan - I like it, I like T names for girls
Karenza - not keen
Demelza - don’t like the ‘deme’ part as it reminds me of dementia
Lillian - plain but non-offensive. Probably not that many little Lillian’s in the world compared to Lilys if you like a less common name
Guinevere - the only name on your list that I would say I really dislike

My favourites are Isla and Teigan. I find the names in your list quite varied. On one hand you have Ocean but also Rosalind. Good luck picking a name.

middleagedandinarage · 18/08/2025 23:07

Isla, Alma, Rosa, Ruby are lovely. Not keen on the others

Alwayssnacking · 18/08/2025 23:10

MiddleAgedDread · 14/08/2025 13:40

Isla - nice but popular
Alma - a bit too old lady IMO
Rosa - ok
Ruby - ok
Nell - needs to be a nickname from something else
Rosalind - dated and not in a trendy way
Romilly - a suburb of Stockport
Ocean - hideous
Nelly - the elephant
Elowen - nice, a bit different but not too different
Teigan - awful
Karenza - have you made this up? I don't understand how you'd pick Isla and then this?!?
Demelza - ridiculous
Lillian - ok, a bit old lady and not in a trendy way
Guinevere - nah

I echo this

Sosososososo · 14/08/2025 12:59

I love this take. I didn't know that about Romilly! If anything I thought it may be a bit too posh! Alma was a battle but is also the Latin for soul. And is Spanish and Portuguese for the word soul. It's also a name.
I see what you mean about elowen

It's Romiley for the place. And it's nice. Don't think you'd describe it as a rougher area of Stockport

mathanxiety · 19/08/2025 00:01

I'm surprised - but may be I shouldn't be - that there are posters who don't know the name Kerensa/ Karensa/ Kerenza/ Karenza is a Cornish name and therefore 100% British, not made up and not a name of foreign origin.

NannyOf8Girls · 19/08/2025 00:06

Romilly my favourite....Nell is lovely.

mathanxiety · 19/08/2025 00:08

Alma was also the name (obv) of Alma Schindler Mahler, wife of Gustav Mahler and a couple of other leading lights of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and a composer in her own right.

Noelshighflyingturds · 19/08/2025 00:12

didgeridid · 19/08/2025 08:08

I like Rosa, Ruby and Lilian. I don't like any of the others. I think Lilian is the nicest

DuchessOfNarcissex · 19/08/2025 08:59

@mathanxiety , It's a fairly recent name. I pp Cornish Dictionary | says love in Cornish is kerensa.
Using a word from a language you aren't proficient in can be tricky - the word might have more than one meaning.
I know someone called Amour and as much as I like the person, I think the name is dreadful.

Dearover · 19/08/2025 16:46

Which is a fairly recent name? Kerensa definitely isn't, as my great granny was called it and there was at least one in most years in my schools in the 70s & 80s.

DuchessOfNarcissex · 19/08/2025 17:22

My great-grandfather was called Balonz.Smile

norsesummer · 21/08/2025 11:58

Isla - nope
Alma - nope
Rosa - nope
Ruby - fine
Nell - nice
Rosalind - fine
Romilly - nope
Ocean - absolutely not
Nelly - nope
Elowen - nope
Teigan - nope
Karenza - absolutely not
Demelza - absolutely not
Lillian - nope, frumpy
Guinevere - nope

17caterpillars1mouse · 24/08/2025 07:45

Isla - overdone and a bit meh

Alma - lovely but might blend in with all the other girls names ending with an a at the moment.

Rosa - like, much nicer than Rose but i prefer other Rosa names

Ruby - lovely, fiesty name

Nell - ok as a nn but i dont like as a full name

Rosalind - beautiful, my favourite Rosa name. Also love Rosalin

Romilly - not a fan

Ocean - no

Nelly - the elephant

Elowen - beautiful

Teigan - sounds very dated to the early 00s already

Karenza - not a fan
Demelza - no
Lillian - lovely, vintage feel, but will just get shortened to just another Lily. Nice for a middle name where it won't be shortened

Guinevere - it's nice, just not my style

Blueuggboots · 24/08/2025 10:11

Not Teigen.

Sosososososo · 24/08/2025 19:36

DemBonesDemBones · 18/08/2025 20:27

Of all of them Nelly is my favourite. Ocean is awful, totally the opposite vibe to the others on your list.

You're pretty much the only one that has professed your love for Nelly! Can I ask what other names you like to get the kind of taste you have?

OP posts:
InMyShowgirlEra · 24/08/2025 19:45

Isla- pretty but overused. Likely to be know as Isla (surname initial).
Alma- Nice enough, pop culture associations not great
Rosa- Pretty
Ruby- Never been keen on it
Nell- Quite nice but likely to date as it's part of the Victorian name trend.
Rosalind- Bit grown up for a baby.
Romilly- What does this even mean? Makes me think of Romulus and Remus.
Ocean- bit hippie, fine if that's your vibe.
Nelly- will always be met with that song. Child will not be grateful.
Elowen- beautiful, love this name
Teigan- ok
Karenza- nope
Demelza- massive nope
Lillian- not a fan.
Guinevere- too try hard.

You said no suggestions but Eleanor gives the child the option to choose Nell/ Ellie/ Nora as she chooses.

Aquabluemouse · 24/08/2025 20:01

I’m a Rosalind and I can confirm that it will be shortened incessantly regardless of whether you request the baby being called Rosalind rather than a nickname. Even my Evri delivery man calls me Ros even though he doesn’t know me and all my parcels are labelled Rosalind. I was Rosie as a baby, Rozzie at school and Ros as an adult. Occasionally I get called Rosa which I hate. Just call me Rosalind ffs.
