Abbie / Abby / Abi – standalone name or nickname? Which spelling?

Hi everyone,

I’m really loving the name Abbie/Abby/Abi at the moment, it’s grown on me a lot recently. I do like Abigail too, but it’s not my absolute favourite compared to just Abbie/Abby/Abi.

Do you think it works well as a stand-alone name, or does it feel too much like a nickname for Abigail? If I named her Abigail, I’d only ever really call her Abi/Abbie/Abby.

I do know an Abbie, and I remember her saying to me, almost 6 years ago, that she wished her name had a longer variant to it, like Abigail, so It’s making me wonder.

Also, which spelling would you choose? Abbie, Abby, or Abi?

I don't personally think Abbie/Abby/Abi is substantial enough to be a standalone name, but Abigail nn Abi is lovely.

For a stand alone name, Abbie or Abby (I prefer Abbie). It's not so popular these days, but back in the 90s Abbie was very popular as a stand alone name. I put it in the same bracket as Katie, or Ellie.

Abi is definitely not a stand alone name. I think everyone would automatically assume she's Abigail (and this is the most obvious spelling for the short form of Abigail).

I’d choose Abigail nn Abbie. I think people will assume she’s Abigail even if she’s always known as Abbie, so it’s probably easier for her to give her the full name, so she doesn’t have to explain that no, she’s just Abbie repeatedly.

I like Abbie. Abby looks like a company name. I would say Abi is only foo Abigail nn.

I have a name that never really worked well being shortened and always wanted that option, so I made sure both my kids had names that meant they could use the full or shortened version. They tend to use their full names in more formal settings and shortened versions with friends and family.

It's my name, and some people do shorten it to Abi, with that spelling.
Mostly, people do use my full name though.
Happy with either!

I really like Abbie too. I'd personally use Abigail on the b/c. Gives her options in the future.

I prefer the Abi spelling but think you would have to use Abigail with Abi as a NN.

I have a relative who lives abroad who named her daughter Abbey.

She wanted it spelled like a church Abbey.

Any varient is fine as I don't particularly like abigail. It breaks down to a big ail.

Nickname only for me, but then I feel the way about most of these “nicknames as given names” and it’s been such as long running popular trend now that clearly most people don’t feel that way 🤣 (in reality Abbie will fit right in at school with Evie, Ellie, Milly, Rosie etc etc)

But in theory it could be a nickname for any name that has “ab” in it (as long as you called her it from Day 1) - like Tabitha, maybe even Christabel. Even though I would guess that probably the majority of Abbie’s have Abigail on the BC.

ETA: But yes, definitely the Abbie spelling.

Why not give her a second name that Abbie could run into (eg. Abbie Marie, not a good example, but you get the idea) - you could put them both as first names, so that she has the option of just Abbie or something more formal sounding.

I love the name Abigail but not fond of the shortened versions
I don’t like Abbie and Abby as stand alone names and would assume they were shortened versions of Abigail
I would use Abigail for b/c and official documentation

I think Abigail.

I have a close relative who is Abigail. She likes that she can decide whether she wants to be Abi or Abigail. Mostly she doesn’t mind which. She uses the spelling Abi but when she was a child used Abbie. At about 11 she decided that Abbie looked babyish so switched to Abi. If you put Abbie on the birth certificate then they don’t have the option to change their spelling. I would always go for the full name.

I know a 40 odd year old Abbie (not abigail) and another one similar age who is Abi (short for Abigail)

so as others have said, for a stand alone name I’d go for Abbie (I’m not a fan of Abby) not Abi.

I think Abbie works best as a standalone name, whereas I'd expect Abby or Abi to be short for something (probably Abigail but just possibly Arabella).

I feel the same about Katie/Katy - Katie could be someone's full name, Katy looks a bit unfinished and I would hope her real name was Katherine.

I've got an Abigail who's known as Abby. She's 22 and I don't think I've ever called her Abigail.

I’m in the minority but if you don’t plan to ever call her Abigail I’d just name her Abbie. That’s the spelling i’d probably go for if it were me.

I have an Abigail. She is always called Abby. Abigail if she's in trouble!

I know 2 Abi/Abbies in their 30s
one is Abbie full name
one is Abigail, Abi for short

My sister is Abby - just Abby on her BC. She hates when people call her Abigail. I have a friend who is Abigail and she is always called Abi. She’d die if I called her Abigail 😂 I also know a toddler Abigail who is never called Abi, always Abigail.

Just pick the version you like best. Can’t really go wrong.

I chose Abbie, but much prefer Abigail!
