Is it from the American tradition to use the mothers maiden name as the first name? I have to say it's pretty awful even so.

I think I've heard of that tradition but it's not the case here. The mum is British and the dad American and I think she realised it might get a few raised eyebrows because she said in her message about it being a normal name over there (her words).

I agree with you and @SwedishEdith though, it's a terrible name. Luckily she told me over WhatsApp so I could let my facial features betray me and then write a suitable reply 😂.

That's hilarious. Banks is absolutely not a common or "normal" name for a girl (or a boy for that matter) in the US. Out of curiosity, I just checked the Social Security Administration website that ranks names in terms of popularity. The name "Banks" does not appear in the top 1000 names for girls at any time in the past 25 years. Your friend is trying to pull the wool over your eyes.
