What’s the thoughts on Matthew? I was astounded to see it wasn’t in the top 100. To me it seems perfect, timeless without being old fashioned.. but now I’m wondering why it’s not more popular 😂😂

full disclosure - my 15 month is Matthew so obviously I think it’s perfect, but keen to know others thoughts

I like it, classic, not very common these days in under 30s but not of a particular decade.

NuffSaidSam · 01/08/2025 23:14

I think it's a bit dated. Loads of Matt's in the 35-50 bracket. It's in the same group as Claire and Sarah and Amy and David and Chris. Perfectly nice names, but they're Mum/Dad names now!

HugoYorway · 01/08/2025 23:14

It's a classic, but Matteo, Mateo, Matthias are currently popular.

Isitreallysohard · 01/08/2025 23:14

I like it, but it feels old. What about Ryan instead? Same sort of era

Yes, I’m sure OP will change the name of her 15mo son on your suggestion.

I really like it!

Unilaterallyinsane · 01/08/2025 23:15

It’s a beautiful name ❤️

Daffodilsarefading · 01/08/2025 23:16

Great name but I think most posters prefer something very out there such as Fabian, Montgomery or Basil type names.

HugoYorway · 01/08/2025 23:16

@Isitreallysohard , Ryan? Oh dear.

RobertaFirmino · 01/08/2025 23:19

That's a good, solid name. Classic and biblical. I think you made a great choice for your little boy.

BoleynMemories13 · 01/08/2025 23:23

Matthew is one of my absolute favourites (along with Thomas and Adam, I do love a classic)!

I was sad when it fell out of the top 100 a few years back, but I guess that makes it seem all the more special now as it's getting more unusual on little ones.

Around me, I hear Matteo and Matei quite a lot these days (very multicultural area) but I only know one Matthew under the age of 10 (who is absolutely lovely).

Soonflower · 01/08/2025 23:26

I love it and have one (4). It’s a biblical classic and to me is much nicer than Thomas or Noah which are always rated much higher!

Feels more dated to me rather than a classic. Nothing at all wrong with it though.

SamBeckettslastleap · 01/08/2025 23:28

I clicked on this (long past baby names) as I thought it was such a lovely name.

Really love it, haven't heard it for ages.

Met a baby Sarah and felt the same.

mamaduckbone · 01/08/2025 23:29

Lovely, classic, timeless.
I would have used it, only dh's best friend is called it so would have been weird.

He’s Matthew with Thomas as a middle name, so we clearly have similar tastes!

I was at a wedding last weekend with Monty and Bertie. Nobody would think you were calling for a dog if you shouted for Matthew in a park.

DramaAlpaca · 01/08/2025 23:33

It's lovely.

Oh I didn't realise she had already had the baby. Bit of a pointless thread then! Woops

MrsBungle · 01/08/2025 23:41

I find it dated. Same category as Steven.

I really like it.

But then, I like the new testament names.

Mathew, mark luke and john, are all such old classics in a good way, and I don't think they ever go out of fashion.

OtherS · 01/08/2025 23:43

One of my favourites, very classic and dignified. Definitely a lot better than Ryan!

Bigearringsbigsmile · 01/08/2025 23:44

It's a lovely classic name

CaptainCarrotsBigSword · 01/08/2025 23:48

I love it, my best friend is a Matt. I think I we are on the cusp of a swing back to less fancy / cutsie names. Archie, Albie, Alfie etc already seem a bit dated to me, and have become the thing they were trying to avoid - common. I can definitely see names like Matthew, Jonathan, Sarah, coming back around in the next five years or so.

Frogs88 · 01/08/2025 23:50

I like it but don’t like Matt/Mattie as nicknames which every Matthew I went to school with seemed to get called. I haven’t met a child called Matthew in ages - most are 30+. Though Matteo seems to be popular now.
