What’s the thoughts on Matthew? I was astounded to see it wasn’t in the top 100. To me it seems perfect, timeless without being old fashioned.. but now I’m wondering why it’s not more popular 😂😂

full disclosure - my 15 month is Matthew so obviously I think it’s perfect, but keen to know others thoughts

A name is ‚dated‘ when it’s strongly associated to a particular era, when it was super fashionable.

Sharon, Karen are dated to the 1960s, whereas Matthew is dated to the 1990s.

I wouldn't associate Matthew with the 90s. It was still very popular then, but not as popular as the 70s and 80s. That would be like calling Sarah, Emma, Laura, Michael or Steven 90s names. They were all still very popular in the 90s, but it's not necessarily the decade of peek popularity for those names.

Matthew
Calliopespa · 03/08/2025 19:31

I grew up with Matthews in the 80's.

I think its one of those names, however, that has never really been hugely fashionable, thus is never really hugely unfashionable.

Many had brothers Nick or Chris.

HugoYorway · 03/08/2025 19:38

@Calliopespa , I think it was a top 10 name throughout the 80s and 90s. I'd say that was hugely fashionable.

I have a Matthew William and a Jonathan Daniel, and think they're all solid classic names that don't really date.

'Same sort of era'???

I don't recall there being any Ryan's in the bible, written around 2000 years ago.

I mean like a Dad name someone over 40.

Oh I hadn't realised it was that popular.

I know quite a few though, so I guess so.

I just never really thought of it as fashionable.

Baby names since 1904: how has yours performed? - Office for National Statistics

It probably compares with Samuel. Still a nice name but was huge for a couple of decades. Samuel is still in the top 50 though (that might be because it's an 'international' name, like Daniel).

Daniel and David have been in the top 100 since 1904.

Spidey66 · 03/08/2025 20:32

I like it, much better than Matteo etc

OSTMusTisNT · 03/08/2025 20:33

I like it and definitely due a come back. Can't go wrong with a classic bible name (the well known ones anyway!)

DisforDarkChocolate · 03/08/2025 20:41

Fantastic and classic name.

Matteo is great if you are Italian. Mateo if Spanish or Croatian.
Don't like it otherwise.

Isitreallysohard · 01/08/2025 23:14

I like it, but it feels old. What about Ryan instead? Same sort of era

Bloody hell, Matthew is a bit out of fashion but it’s a nice classic.

Ryan is dated (in that there is nothing classic about it and it became popular and then unpopular v quickly) and is very much a naughty boys name. Why would you saddle a child with that?

Scandivibes · 03/08/2025 20:55

I love it too OP, great choice!

Edited

I grew up with soooo many Sams! Sams and Nicks.

My mum said if she didn't know their name when addressing them, she just alternated between Sam or Nick and was mostly right!

Still, I quite like them both actually.

HugoYorway · 03/08/2025 20:58

@theunbreakablecleopatrajones ,my thoughts exactly. Nothing against the name, but it's an Irish name that became very popular for a shortish time only.

weegiemum · 03/08/2025 21:01

It was our boy choice for both our dds. Strangely, ds was born in between and we’d changed our minds in there, so have an Aidan but no Matthew.

they’re all in their 20s now, but I do know a few Matthews and several quite a lot younger. Classic and underused these days!

IsThePopeCatholic · 03/08/2025 21:03

I’ve got a Matthew. He calls himself Matt. He loves his name.

All that table shows (from what I can see) is the ranking of the name (cool graphic though, I like things like that). It doesn't show how many boys were actually given the name each year. Popular names now are nowhere near as popular as the popular names of the 90s but even by then people were branching out a bit more than they had in previous decades when it came to choosing names. Names could rank higher in the 90s but actually have less registrations than the 80s, just like names can rank highly now despite having far fewer registrations than they did 10 years ago when they ranked a bit lower. Name stats are strange like that.

Isitreallysohard · 03/08/2025 19:59

You won't meet many men called Ryan over 40. It absolutely boomed in the 90s, largely due to the popularity of Ryan Giggs at the time. Obviously he's in that age bracket now, so I'm not saying there aren't 40 year old Ryans around. Ryan would have been considered quite unusual over here when the likes of Ryan Giggs were born though. It absolutely boomed in the 90s and 00s so most Ryans are now in their 20s and early 30s.

I agree. I don't think being in the top 10 automatically makes a name 'fashionable'. I look at the current boys top 10 and I wouldn't call Muhammad, Oliver and George fashionable. Just traditional classics which appeal to parents across many generations. Whereas something like Luca very much is an of the moment fashion. The 'fashionable' names tend to move up and down the charts more quickly over the years. Names which remain top 10 for 10 years or more are not necessarily a fashion.

Lesina · 03/08/2025 22:18

Beautiful name. Classic and timeless. :)
