Thoughts on the name Marnie?

Due my first baby girl in a few months and trying to figure out a name. We are pretty set on Marnie but interested to hear other people's thoughts on it as it's not one I hear or see a lot.

If you don't like it, what other names do you like?

I love the name Marnie. It’s a beautiful name.

OopsieeDaisy · 01/08/2025 15:26

I think it’s a really pretty name! But the Marnie at DC’s nursery does sometimes get called ‘Marns’ which I don’t love!

I like Marnie and I love Romy. The Boris Johnson connection wouldn’t put me off, he’s not in the news so much now.

Firebird83 · 01/08/2025 16:28

Sounds too much like Armani

theunbreakablecleopatrajones · 01/08/2025 20:59

I quite like it

I feels quite nicknamey to me so I would make it short for Marina or something

TeenagersRus · 02/08/2025 01:15

Love it! Cute but slightly cool, works for all ages. Just unusual enough. It was on my list but didn't go with our surname. I also loved Romily - shortening to Romy (as per BJ) put me off!

Reminds me of a pet dog name

ButteredRadish · 02/08/2025 01:36

Love it! 🥰

I love it. I'd like to be called Marnie, though think I'd prefer a longer more formal name on my BC, maybe Marianne or something.

Magicwand80 · 02/08/2025 02:14

I like it.

If I had a girl it would be Imogen.

LuckyHare · 02/08/2025 02:46

Lovely name 😊 Makes me think of the book When Marnie was there which I loved as a child

BruisedNeckMeat · 02/08/2025 03:17

I had to look up what a rhotic accent is!

Honestly, it depends on what your accent is and how it sounds. I personally hear it as an American name and sounds weird in most English accents.

I think sometimes when you’re sounding out names you don’t always pronounce them as you will normally. I say this with a DD who has a popular, vowelly name. It only occurred to me recently that it sounds so much nicer when a RP type says it than when I do (Estuary-ish 🙁) and that when I was choosing I was putting on a bit of a nicer accent!

Emanwenym · 02/08/2025 18:47

Many names look pretty but aren't IRL. Nah-uh-leh vs Natalie Grin @BruisedNeckMeat .

Quite a lot of people can't sound a rhotic R.

NeverAlways · 02/08/2025 18:50

I’m not that keen sorry. I like Romy though!

Daffodilsarefading · 04/08/2025 08:24

I like it.

I've loved it since I read When Marnie Was There at primary school

Always make me think of that too. But yes unusual enough, but recognisable.

Sunshineandgrapefruit · 04/08/2025 08:40

I really like it.

My one year old niece is Marnie and I also know one in her seventies. I think it’s a great name.
