Thoughts on the name Marnie?

Due my first baby girl in a few months and trying to figure out a name. We are pretty set on Marnie but interested to hear other people's thoughts on it as it's not one I hear or see a lot.

If you don't like it, what other names do you like?

Like others I prefer it as a nn for more classic Marina/Marianne/Mariana as “Marnie” as a given name is very trendy, according to the stats - it’s rising rapidly and I wouldn’t be surprised if it just scrapes into the Top 100 soon (we’ll know when they release the stats tomorrow!)

I don’t know masses of little kids as DC is only starting pre- school this year, but I’ve still met a couple of little Marnie’s. However if you don’t care about it potentially dating, then I think she’ll fit right in with her peers names and it’s quite a cool name too (the Hitchcock film is great).

Personally I much prefer the sound of similar Sylvie or maybe even Indie (though that last one is probably even trendier than Marnie), but that’s just my own tastes.

Squishymallows · 29/07/2025 15:11

I like it it’s cute but I would want a proper name as well

autienotnaughty · 29/07/2025 15:12

I love it. I know one Marnie in her 50’s.

StarlightRobot · 29/07/2025 15:15

I love Romy and Marnie x

StarlightRobot · 29/07/2025 15:16

What about Romilly, and Romy for short?

EvelynBeatrice · 29/07/2025 15:34

I’m put off it by the old (and very misogynistic) film of that name about a woman who hated the male touch due to sexual abuse.

Romilly and Romy are pretty. Mildred/ Millie/ Caroline / Calista / Callie.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 29/07/2025 15:39

I love it and think on it as a name in its own right, not a nickname. I only know one person called this, a lovely woman pin her 40s, and also one adorable little black kitten recently acquired by my neighbour.

justaddittothelist · 29/07/2025 15:40

I quite like it, although it does make me think of the girl from Geordie shore. Not that it's an issue tho, I quite liked Geordie shore 😂

What about Lainey?

JillyGiraffe · 29/07/2025 15:50

I’ve never met a Marnie, so it just makes me think of Marnie from Geordie Shore. I personally wouldn’t choose it because it sounds like a nickname and rhymes with sarnie!

Moreteaandchocolate · 29/07/2025 17:22

Romy and Marnie are both lovely 😊

BasilThePlant · 29/07/2025 17:25

I knew a Marnie, a diminutive of Marianna.

I think it's lovely (as is Marianna)

DiggingHoles · 29/07/2025 17:26

There is a movie name "When Marnie was There". Worth watching. I feel neutral about the name.

Dandelionsand4leafclover · 29/07/2025 17:28

Not if you live up north, as 'ar Marnie sounds a bit cringe.

NescafeAndIce · 29/07/2025 17:31

This is one of my favourite girls' names!
The only thing I'd be slightly hesitant over is the potential for mardy/moany Marnie....

Norastroud · 29/07/2025 19:16

I really like Marnie, I know a baby and a teen with this name. Personally I think I’d use Marianne with nn Marnie.
Also love Romilly with nn Romy or Milly.
Similar options I like are Mila or Mina.
Best of luck 😊

RitaIncognita · 29/07/2025 19:22

I like it when spoken with a rhotic accent, but not so fond when it's said with a non-rhotic accent.

BatshitCrazyWoman · 29/07/2025 19:31

I love the name Marnie (I had two boys, so never got to use it). Like a PP, I've loved it since I read When Marnie Was There as a child.

HoratioNightboy · 29/07/2025 20:43

I really like it. It's my cousin's name and she's in her late 40s. Apparently named after Marni Nixon, the singer. Amused at all the people saying it's like mardy - I used to know a Mardie too!

Emanwenym · 31/07/2025 08:16

If you like it, use it. It doesn't need a longer BC name.

I don't like the suggested names like Marianna and Romilly.

Smoothwater · 31/07/2025 08:23

I love it. I don’t know anyone younger than me called it. It’s high on my list for girl’s names.

PerfectTuesday · 31/07/2025 08:24

I don't like it - there was a character in a comic I read in the 80s called Marnie and she was a rough bully, using her size and strength to intimidate her gang of girls - and that has somehow stuck with me 😄

petras · 31/07/2025 11:43

I adore Marnie - exceptionally pretty.

Sagittarius25 · 31/07/2025 11:45

I like it, I used to go to college with a friend called Marnie. It was also on our list of girl names. DS has someone in his nursery room called Marnie.

Gillyyy · 31/07/2025 20:20

I love the name Marnie, reminds me of the tv series Girls, I’m surprised that I’m the first to mention it!

Also Romy is lovely, I went to school with a girl called Romily which is pretty! I’ve seen it spelt Romilly too but I think I prefer Romily. I wouldn’t worry too much about Boris Johnson’s child.

I think you might like Coralie and Verity too.

user1492757084 · 01/08/2025 11:24

I know one Marnie who is really Margaret and one 24 year old Marnie who was named after her mother's friend's beautiful Collie dog.
It is a sweet name. It is positive.
I also like Minnie, Min, Mamie and Mimmie.
