Lucas is a nice safe bet, I don’t love it but it’s the easiest choice.
Rowan I like, is it a gender neutral name? If I saw it on a list I wouldn’t be sure if Rowan was male or female…does that bother you?
Robin is cute, another gender neutral so perhaps that’s what you’re going for?
August…just no on a personal level I strongly dislike.
Lysander is actually my favourite but it’s a name to grow into so you’d have to be ready with an easy nickname or straightforward middle name if your ds hated it or found it too much of a mouthful.

Ribecx · 07/07/2025 07:56

@IanStirlingrocks Thanks - interesting that you dislike August so much, is that because you know someone with the name?

A few people I know have said they dislike it too and it's making me doubt it.... it used to be my favourite.

Lucas....not hugely keen on the rest

DisplayPurposesOnly · 07/07/2025 07:59

Not august

mumonthehill · 07/07/2025 08:00

Lucas is my least favourite and I personally love August and the shortenings of Auggie or Gus. I have a Gus though so am a bit biased!!! I also love Lysander, really interesting name and great to say.

I can’t consciously think of any Augusts that I dislike (I know Auggie in Wonder but that’s quite cute) I just have this mental image of “August” being a little boy who is overindulged and therefore loud and spoilt. Not really sure why though, sorry preference isn’t always logical.

Enko · 07/07/2025 08:05

Lysander and August are my favourites not so keen on the others.

I tend to prefer known names that are less common both fits under that bil imo.

SupposesRoses · 07/07/2025 08:27

I wouldn’t use August because people don’t know that the name is pronounced differently from the month.
The others on your list are all nice, but I think Robin is the best in terms of being familar to everyone yet not widely used.

user1492757084 · 07/07/2025 09:02

My faves, inspired from your list, are Augustus,
Angus, Gustave and Rowan, Rohan.

Moreteaandchocolate · 07/07/2025 09:20

Lucas - nice but popular
Rowan - nice (quite unisex round me if that bothers you?)
Robin - nice but again quite unisex
Lysander - dislike - it’s too fancy for my taste!
August - dislike as it’s a month not a name to me (I don’t know anyone with the name though, maybe if I knew a few people called August it would start to feel more name-like!)

I would choose Lucas (although I prefer Luke and it’s less commonly used atm).

Emanwenym · 07/07/2025 09:50

Lucas - very popular, Luca more so, Will be Luke.
Rowan - popular, unisex but usually a boy's name
Robin - fairly popular, unisex but usually a boy's name
R names seem very popular currently, which puts me off.
From those, I'd pick Robin and probably call him Rob, so maybe put Robert on the BC.

Lysander - too fancy
August - don't like it, too close to disgust. AU-gust or Au-GUST?

mummysmagicmedicine · 07/07/2025 11:03

Lucas- I prefer Luca but is a safe choice
Rowan- I do really like
Robin- not for me but if you love it that’s the important thing
Lysander- not a fan personally
August- I love. Think it’s a perfect sweet spot name, known but not too common. Will likely be shortened to Gus or Augie so make sure you’re okay with that if you do pick this name!

Mumofgirls2017 · 07/07/2025 12:27

LOVE August

Also like Rowan and Lysander though would worry Lysander would been seen as pretentious or difficult to pull off depending on the area you’re from.

KayEmAy · 07/07/2025 19:52

Team Rowan :)

user2848502016 · 07/07/2025 20:34

Lucas - a bit boring, never liked it. Just Luke is nicer
Rowan - lovely, definitely making a comeback
Robin - also love this
Lysander - unusual but I like it, could be Xander for short?
August - like and getting quite popular

Robin is my favourite from your list

CarpetKnees · 07/07/2025 20:35

Lucas is okay.

Wouldn't be on my list, but it is FAR better than any of the others on your list.

alexalisten · 07/07/2025 20:36

I only like Lucas out of them

Scottishshopaholic · 07/07/2025 23:13

I love Lysander

@SupposesRoseshow would you pronounce August then? I’d pronounce it the same way as the month, Google says you can pronounce it by stressing the Aw or the gust…I’m curious though it probably won’t make me like the name more 😆

Firsttimebabymummy · 08/07/2025 06:54

Lysander is my favourite by far.

Emanwenym · 08/07/2025 08:48

@IanStirlingrocks , rhymes with disgust. [ɔːˈɡʌst] not /ˈɔː.ɡəst/

Edited typo.

The boys’ name is pronounced like the adjective, aw-GUST. When the name is given to girls it’s pronounced like the month, which is probably skewing Google’s AI results.

Huh? How is the name pronounced?
I didn't know it was different.
@Ribecx I like Lucas best.

That's how I say the month though 🤔

Are you sure you say the month with a strong emphasis on the second syllable? I think in most varieties of English, a native speaker would say AW-gust for the month and the girl’s name and aw-GUST for the adjective and the boy’s name.
