Is Connie Clyde a nice name?

Bellalily99 · 06/07/2025 21:53

We have been using the name Connie for our baby girl bump most of the pregnancy and I really love it however I am worried that it doesn’t go with our surname Clyde.
is it too similar to the Bonnie & Clyde reference or do you think people will not associate the two?
we are thinking middle name Mae. Are surnames really that important to consider?

It doesn’t work as Bonnie and Clyde do spring to mind unfortunately

EvelynBeatrice · 07/07/2025 10:14

I’m sorry. Connie is pretty - I had an aunt Constance - but agree that one immediately thinks Bonnie and Clyde.

Is it the ‘ie’ sound you like? What about Bryony,, Darcy, Sophie, Bethany, Josie, Jenny, Ottilie, Lydie ( Lydia).

Other names that are nice with Clyde? Karmen, Kirsten, Katie, Caroline.

How about:

Callie Clyde
Lily Clyde
Daisy Clyde
Daniella Clyde
Bryony Clyde
Nancy Clyde
Isabel Clyde

These are all much nicer sounding than Connie Clyde.

YYYDlilah · 07/07/2025 12:08

Go all out and call her Bonnie - Bonnie Anne Clyde.

myrtleWilson · 07/07/2025 12:19

Agree it’s not a good name option however am now Off to listen to one of my favourite songs from Luna/Stereolab cover of Serge G’s Bonnie and Clyde

I honestly don't see the big deal. Her generation (who she'll grow up with) won't care less about Bonnie and Clyde. If I asked my 8 or 5 year old who they are they wouldn't care or know to even notice it in school. In fact my children probably couldn't even tell you their friends surnames 😂

You could always use Connie as a middle name if you are bothered by it. I do think Connie is such a sweet name.

I think Bonnie and Clyde is one of those references which won't die out, unfortunately.

They were committing their crimes in the 1930s, nearly 100 years ago, but are still instantly recognisable names - I don't think media will stop referencing them any time soon.

Your underestimating your children if you think they don't know their friends surnames.
Of course they do, esp in school when registers are taken and children often have the same first names.

As little children they might not know who Bonnie and Clyde are but it's not a reference that is going to die out any time soon.
And you never know when some film maker is going to use it to make a 'based on a true story' film.

chaiselozenges · 07/07/2025 13:32

No. Also not another ‘something’ Mae, it’s the most overused filler middle name out there along with Rose and Grace. Boring. Boring.

pambeesleyhalpert · 07/07/2025 13:39

IReallyLoveItHere · 06/07/2025 21:57

Bonnie Blue came straight to my mind - not an association you want!

Same!

BeamMeUpCountMeIn · 07/07/2025 14:01

No.
If you want a longer first name use Madelaine, Alexandra, Josephine etc.

Chewbecca · 07/07/2025 14:02

No

YYYDlilah · 07/07/2025 14:04

@autumngirl714 , Her generation (who she'll grow up with) won't care less about Bonnie and Clyde.
You think they won't be interested in general knowledge?

If I asked my 8 or 5 year old who they are they wouldn't care or know to even notice it in school.
They're a bit young to know about bank robbers.

In fact my children probably couldn't even tell you their friends surnames 😂
Given that some names are duplicated in classes or peer groups, they will as they get older.

autumngirl714 · 07/07/2025 14:21

@YYYDlilah well swing how I don't really care about Bonnie and Clyde at my age of 34 so maybe not!

Just my opinion! 🙃

Presumably you've heard of them, though.

I think it's one of those things that just seeps into our consciousness. You don't need to know anything about Bonnie and Clyde to recognise the names.

WaitedBlankey · 07/07/2025 14:36

You can't call her that, you'll stick her with a lifetime of Bonnie and Clyde references.

ModerateOrGoodOccasionallyPoor · 07/07/2025 14:46

No. I don't like the name Connie to start with and together it sounds too much like Bonnie and Clyde. Also some names immediately conjure up an image and in this case it's the image of a big, brassy fishwife type woman with a bad attitude. The sort of gobby servant in Downton who would bully the scullery maid then run away with the silver and frame someone else for her crime.

autumngirl714 · 07/07/2025 14:50

I've heard did them but it doesn't mean I wouldn't call my daughter Connie Clyde if that was my favourite name. I don't think it's a big deal, but like I said, that's my opinion.

YYYDlilah · 07/07/2025 14:50

@autumngirl714 . Not knowing things and not caring isn't something to be proud of. Just because you don't know/care doesn't mean others don't.

RobertaFirmino · 07/07/2025 14:53

Lovely name but the association is far too strong. The film is considered to be a classic too so it's unlikely to go away.

How about River, Strath or Right-Turn instead?

Crowpigeon · 07/07/2025 14:55

I actually think something with more syllables would suit your surname
(like Montgomery Clyde in Paddington)

Why does it bother you so much that I don't agree with you?

OP has asked for opinions. I've shared mine and explained it. She's free to ignore it, as are you.

I personally don't think it's that big of a deal and my initial association isn't Bonnie and Clyde. End of.

YYYDlilah · 07/07/2025 15:09

It doesn't bother me @autumngirl714 , but your assumption that the children born today won't know things that are in the public consciousness does.

autumngirl714 · 07/07/2025 16:27

It's not based on a assumption, my two children don't know who they are. Maybe you're assumption every child does know them should bother you more! 👍🏼 @YYYDlilah

BastardesEverywhere · 07/07/2025 16:31

Mmm. The absolute first thing I thought of was Bonnie Blue 😬 I have no idea why, it popped straight to mind. Similar vibe, name wise I suppose, with the repeating letters and same syllables.

Just scanning further down before submitting and can see it's not just me though.

YYYDlilah · 07/07/2025 16:32

@autumngirl714 Maybe you're assumption every child does know them should bother you more!

I'm not assuming anything.
