Bramwell, Wilfred, Digby or Atticus (yes I know…)

Aware all of these are a bit/a lot out there. Our elder DS is called Nathaniel and tbh I wish I’d saved his middle name for no 2 (Rowan) but too late now!

Digby (Diggy for short) - dh loves, I’m not sure
Bramwell (Bram) - I love, dh not sure, can anyone think of a good alternative long name that shortens to Bram?!
Atticus (Attie) - we both like but worry about associations to the character post Go Set a Watchman
Wilfred (Wilf but obvs he has the option of Fred if he chooses) - DH loves, I’m not sure and don’t like the Boris Johnson connection

Find boys names so hard! Any views? Alternatives which are unusual but less marmite?

Bram is a name in its own right, which is quite common in the Netherlands. But I think it's from Abraham, if you like that one?

ShittyHottie · 23/06/2025 09:27

Abraham, surely?

LadyDanburysHat · 23/06/2025 09:30

Digby is a black labrador, please don't. Not keen on Bramwell or Bram, just doesn't have a pleasant sound to it.

Atticus and Wilfred are both fine. Wilf is pretty popular these days though.

Lelongducanal · 23/06/2025 09:30

Nathaniel and Abraham feels a bit heavily biblical… but I guess Nate and Bram less so.

Yeah this is my concern with Wilf. Lots of em at nursery.

WitcheryDivine · 23/06/2025 09:35

I like Bram on its own.

I couldn’t Wilf post Boris.

Blaise? Willoughby?

Pigeon123456 · 23/06/2025 09:36

I like all of your options other than Digby. I think Wilfred is my favourite.

Some other names that feel similar to your list:
Ambrose
Cassian
Wilbur
Hector
Montgomery (Monty)
Maxwell

if You love Rowan then use that. My sisters first name is my middle name and can honestly say that it’s has never been an issue in any way.

other suggestions. -
Wilf is ok but more popular.

how about Hector?

YorkshireIndie · 23/06/2025 09:37

I know one little Digby and he will be the only one in his class which is always a plus.

Wilfred is a lovely name (and other than the last child is the only of Boris and Clarries children with a sensible name)

2chocolateoranges · 23/06/2025 09:38

Definitely out their names, best is Atticus. I know 9 year old Atticus and I know the name from To kill a mockingbird, not sure of the connection you’ve made.

Digby and Wilfred to me are dogs names.

Interesting! Hadn’t thought of that. I think it might be too late as we do call him ‘Nathaniel Rowan’ when we’re emphasising a point, so it is sort of in use.

Wilfred, Atticus and Bram are all fairly popular in East London now. They are the new Ezra, Arlo and Otto (actually to be fair Wilfred was also around in Arlo’s heyday - probably why you perceive it as more popular). I think any of them will date pretty badly and sound try-hard hipster to me, whereas Nathaniel/Nate isn’t in that category at all and is much more classic.

Digby is just awful - a dog name.

Hector is another one that I’d put in the hipster parent category but doesn’t grate so much on me for some reason. What about Isaac?

Bridport · 23/06/2025 09:41

The names you've listed make me think of Steptoe and Son. https://www.comedy.co.uk/tv/steptoe_and_son/characters/

How is 'Diggy' short for 'Digby'? It's the same number of letters!

Coffeeishot · 23/06/2025 09:43

Digby is a dogs name im usually quite forgiving on name threads but again Digby is a dogs name ! Of your names i like Wilfred and Atticus, to me Bramwell sounds like a house or Family Estate im not keen.

A lot of people won't even know they're both biblical tbh. Less and less people actually read the bible/go to church these days.

Yeah, this is my fear - and we are in east London (of course). That’s the reason I liked Nathaniel - classic but not common.

Isaac is lovely (Zac) but I worry about ott on biblical. We did consider Zachary, maybe should go back on the list.

The horse was called Hercules, I think. How about adding that, OP, or, given that your DS has a pretty mainstream name, would it not be fair to do the same for the next one? The currently popular names soon date.

Coffeeishot · 23/06/2025 09:49

Lots of names are Biblical aren't they ?
My own children have Biblical names but it wasn't my first thought when we named them.

CoubousAndTourmalet · 23/06/2025 09:50

I probably shouldn't say this... but... we've had two black cats that were named Wilf and Bram - which was indeed short for Bramwell, not Abraham.

We've also had cats called Hamish, Claude, Archie & Theo. This was years ago, so it's odd to see these names trending for babies now.

Algernon (Algy) will likely be the next popular boys name - that was our previous dog.

Bridport · 23/06/2025 09:51

How is Diggy short for Digby?

SorrowsPrayers · 23/06/2025 09:52

I love Digby!

Frrrout · 23/06/2025 09:53

I have a Jasper. Yes, people call
their cats and dogs that, as they do Max or Charlie. But it’s just uncommon enough that there are no other Jaspers in his class but maybe one other in school. He’s a Jas for short, which suits him too.

How is Diggy short for Digby?

I think she meant nickname rather than "short for"
