Hi! We are looking for names that work in both the Nordic region and in the UK. We can't decide, but here are our current top 5 contenders (in no particular order)

For girls we like:
Thora
Astrid
Eira
Vera / (or Vega)
Ingrid

For boys we like:
Sven
Nils
Ivar
Björn
Bernard

What girl and boy names are nicest?

I like Thora and Eira and for a boy, just Ivar.

soupforbrains · 12/06/2025 23:18

I’ve always love Astrod for a girl. I actively dislike Ingrid, Vera and Thora and am neutral about Eira.

on the boys side I like Sven and Nils but think the others are a bit ‘old man’.

Have you considered Elsa? I know it had a bit of a popularity flash because of frozen but it’s a nice Nordic name which has always worked in both languages and cultures.

Mumofgirls2017 · 12/06/2025 23:20

I absolutely love thora

oit of boys probably say bernard

everyone will differ from me in opinion though probably!

GiddyCrab · 12/06/2025 23:20

Vera and Sven.

Springadorable · 12/06/2025 23:21

For girls, Astrid. I really dislike like Vega.

For boys, they are all very Scandinavian. Which is fine, but there's no UK overlap.

Steelworks · 12/06/2025 23:22

Thora - feels dated. Thora Hird?
Astrid - love
Eira - like , sounds Welsh
Vera / (or Vega)- ok
Ingrid - love

For boys we like:
Sven - love
Nils - not bad
Ivar - ok, sounds Russian
Björn - love, love, love
Bernard - sounds dated

Mandarinaduck · 12/06/2025 23:24

I like Vera and Ingrid best. All the boys names are nice except Bjorn which sounds somehow old fashioned. Is it making a comeback in Sweden (or maybe it was never old-fashioned there, I don't know).

Björn is making a little bit of a comeback in Sweden at the moment...😜

I love Thora
Astrid is nice and quite popular in the Uk
Eira is fine
Vera and Ingrid are a bit lumpy

I think it’s Ivar for boy
The rest don’t really work in the UK
don’t call him Bernard, it’s a joke name

NuffSaidSam · 13/06/2025 00:39

I like Astrid and Ingrid a lot.

Not keen on Thora or Vera (too many old lady connotations for me).

I don't know how to pronounce Eira

I'm not keen on any of the boys names, but if I had to pick one I'd go for Ivar.

Sven has reindeer vibes now.
Nils makes me think Nil by Mouth
Björn Abba
Bernard is very old man...also makes me think of the book Not Now Bernard.

Eenameenadeeka · 13/06/2025 02:07

Björn and Eira

Moreteaandchocolate · 13/06/2025 06:57

Girls
Eira is my favourite- beautiful name.
Thora is my second favourite - do you pronounce it Thora or Tora?
Astrid I like, just worry about it being shortened to Ass in secondary school (all names seem to be shortened to the first syllable round here!)
Ingrid is fine, it just has a harsher sound to me
Vera feels dated.

Boys
Ivar is my favourite- I really like this
Nils is quite nice, although Nil is a negative word I think that association would fade quickly when I met someone with the name
Bjorn - feels dated to me- ABBA association - but I think it would be fine for this generation as they wouldn’t have that association
Sven - reindeer from Frozen - definitely a current association that would put me off
Bernard - comical sounding as it’s dated

Zebralie · 13/06/2025 08:21

Vera & Björn

mummysmagicmedicine · 13/06/2025 08:42

I adore Vera and Sven

OneLoudTiger · 13/06/2025 08:45

Love love love the names Astrid and Ingrid.

Of your boys names, my favourite is Nils.

FettleOfKish · 13/06/2025 08:50

Astrid was on our list had we had a girl, along with Freya / Freja.

For a boy I liked Leif (Scandinavian DH quickly vetoed it!) and I also like Lars in general but at the risk of being outing it definitely does not work with our surname.

In the end we went for a name that’s more common in the UK but also used in Scandinavia.

FettleOfKish · 13/06/2025 08:52

Ps.. We sometimes call DS ‘ThunderBear’ in jest as Torbjörn is about the coolest name I’ve ever come across if we had a pet bear or a huge dog or a cartoon character instead of a real child.

AdaColeman · 13/06/2025 08:55

Astrid is a gorgeous name! I also like Ingrid very much.
I'm not keen on your other girls' names.

Bernard would be my first choice, with Nils a close second.
Have you considered Erik? It's a super name.

LonelyMom123 · 13/06/2025 08:56

I like Thora, Astrid and Vera for a girl and Sven for a boy

MelonElla · 13/06/2025 09:07

Astrid is a beautiful name. Nils for a boy.

TheyFuckYouUpYourMamAndDad · 13/06/2025 09:07

Thora and Astrid are lovely.

Nils is the only name I like from your boys choices.

Please don’t use Bernard…it’s such an ugly old man name and wouldn’t work in the UK at all!

MissScarletInTheBallroom · 13/06/2025 09:08

Astrid and Nils.

SabbatWheel · 13/06/2025 09:09

Astrid and Nils

Nannyfannybanny · 13/06/2025 09:09

Anything but Vera,it's an old lady, not a cute baby.. what about Inga!

Emanwenym · 13/06/2025 09:11

Thora - like, but is it Tora or Thora?
Astrid - like
Eira - not keen
Vera / (or Vega) - don't like
Ingrid - like best from your list

Sven - like best from your list
Nils - like
Ivar - my Ikea shelves
Björn - like
Bernard - like but seems a bit like a granddad name
