Hi! We are looking for names that work in both the Nordic region and in the UK. We can't decide, but here are our current top 5 contenders (in no particular order)

For girls we like:
Thora
Astrid
Eira
Vera / (or Vega)
Ingrid

For boys we like:
Sven
Nils
Ivar
Björn
Bernard

What girl and boy names are nicest?

Thora - perfectly acceptable, just don't like the sound personally
Astrid - better than Ingrid. Quite trendy in the UK but I don't like the rid bit.
Eira - not a fan
Vera / (or Vega) - not a fan of Vega. Vera is better. Could make a comeback soon.
Ingrid - not a fan

Sven - I like it but it does have Frozen links!
Nils - ok
Ivar - fine
Björn - ok
Bernard - not a fan

I love Thora!

Don’t like Astrid at all, don’t understand why it’s so popular as it’s so harsh sounding. Vera is just frumpy. Nils and Ivar for boys.

MargotTenenbaumscoat · 13/06/2025 15:12

I absolutely love Vega and Bernard!
Second favourites are Ingrid and Björn.

Yerto · 13/06/2025 15:26

I like Eira and Thora from your girls names. Other ideas - Freja, Linnea, Elin, Alma

Not fussed on any of your boys names sorry. Would probably pick Nils. How about Oskar, Otto, Isak?

KayEmAy · 13/06/2025 16:44

Love Vega!

Favorite boy name is Nils

Perspectiveis · 13/06/2025 16:46

What about Frey or Helly for a boy. They are Norwegian I believe.

Nannyfannybanny · 13/06/2025 16:59

Vega, did anyone see Star Trek film! Bernard, Mathews,Breslaw??

LittleGreenDuck · 13/06/2025 17:47

Astrid and Ingrid are both lovely. Really not sure about the boys names. I'd say Sven is the best of the bunch.

Norastroud · 13/06/2025 21:18

I like Vera, Ingrid & Bernard

AnneMarieW · 13/06/2025 22:10

Vera and Bernard are very dated here - most UK born ones are elderly (I have met a couple of younger Vera’s but they are from other countries). So I’d personally avoid those two.

Bjorn is lovely but won’t get the umlaut here much if that matters to you, and Vega is a very uncommon name in the UK so may have spelling or pronunciation issues (I assume it’s “ Vay -gah” like the start of Vegas? It’s a pretty sound).

But all your others choices seem very usable- I especially love beautiful Eira (which is popular in Wales too) and I think my favourite of your boys choices is Ivar.

lurkerchan · 14/06/2025 15:38

Astrid and Ivar

aquadog · 14/06/2025 19:43

Vera and Björn

Bernard is handsome.

Eira
Astrid
Vera

Christoff

BangersAndGnash · 15/06/2025 10:01

Vega

Sven

Enko · 15/06/2025 10:04

Dont do Björn as the English tongue just cant turn to say it right so you end up with 2 very different pronunciation.

Of your list i like the rest my fabourites being Benard and Ingrid

starwarsandpeace · 15/06/2025 12:31

Astrid and Ingrid

Your boy name choices are very Scandinavian rather than used in the UK.
I know an older Sven, based in the UK, but from Belgium and people accidentally called him Seven a lot, despite people knowing who Sven Goran Eriksson was!

More common used names in the UK, which would also work in the Nordics are: Soren, Marius, Lukas, Alexander,

Xflips · 15/06/2025 21:44

Ingrid is lovely

TheMummyJade · 16/06/2025 06:20

I know a young girl named Ingrid and she is absolutely darling, the name suits her wonderfully and everyone I know thinks it's a lovely name.

Autumn38 · 16/06/2025 16:25

Love Astrid
like Ingrid.

the boys names are just Scandinavian names - no cross over
