Caitlin, kaitlyn or katelyn?

Im due soon and still struggling on picking a girls name, I think the spelling Caitlin looks very classic and timeless but DH likes the Katelyn or Kaitlyn spelling. I'm also concerned if it would sound too dated these days no matter the spelling? I personally think the original spelling will stand the test of time but not keen on the spellings he likes, they seem very American.
Thoughts?

Caitlin is the nicest I think, though remember, you, dad and the teachers will be the only ones using it, your daughter will be Kate to the rest or the world

All 3 girls I know with this name (2x Caitlin and 1 Caitlyn) are still known by their full name in their late teens/early 20s. Not one of them is Cait.

Caitlin is the original and best

This

We have a Caitlin in the family. It's a beautiful name and this is my favourite spelling. Be prepared for many instances of your DD being called Catlin though, or having it written like that in cards. Amazing how many people just can't see the first 'i'. It's better now that our Caitlin is a young adult. It happened a lot at school, and especially when she got a new teacher.

PorgyandBess · 27/05/2025 16:37

Caitlin. The other spellings make you look stupid.

Pemba · 27/05/2025 17:13

I think your spelling is best, the K ones are quite contrived and very Kardashian as a pp said!

But now I've listening

It’s spelt Caitlin, don’t give your child a misspelt name!

Pemba · 27/05/2025 17:16

Posted too early...

Now I've listened to the authentic Irish language pronunciation - that's not an attractive sound at all!

I prefer the Kate Lyn sound, even though it's inauthentic.

SpottedDonkey · 27/05/2025 17:18

Caitlin, obviously.

If you’re going to use a traditional Irish name or, for that matter, a traditional name from any other culture, you should spell it correctly. Spelling it incorrectly isn’t just wrong, it’s culturally disrespectful.

usedtobeaylis · 27/05/2025 17:18

Caitlin.

Moreteaandchocolate · 27/05/2025 17:23

Definitely Caitlin - gorgeous name 😊

AnnieMay55 · 27/05/2025 17:23

I've only known Caitlyn spelt this way. I think it looks wrong with two 'i's.

Jibberty · 27/05/2025 17:29

Caitlin. I would say that though as I’m a 50 something one. Can’t stand the ones with K and Y in. To me they’re tacky AF.

Is it a traditional Irish name?
I thought it was Kate-Lynn written in curly letters.
None of the Caitlins I know would even recognise the Irish pronunciation.

Tomatotater · 27/05/2025 18:09

I would say all the 'K spellings have been ruined by the Kardashians, although the first thing I thought of was Caitlyn Jenner so i would say they have all ruined a lovely name. But if you really want it, Id go for Caitlin

tinyspiny · 27/05/2025 18:11

Caitlin

Westfacing · 27/05/2025 18:12

Caitlin - it used to be pronounced Cat Lin, in my day!

AddictedToBooks · 27/05/2025 18:13

My beautiful little niece is called Kaitlyn but constantly gets referred to as Katie.

KayEmAy · 27/05/2025 18:16

Caitlin all day

Didshejustsaythatoutloud · 27/05/2025 18:19

Why does it have to be caitlin?, sooo many caitlins

Because the OP and her husband like the name.

RaininSummer · 27/05/2025 18:43

Caitlin.

BebbanburgIsMine · 27/05/2025 18:57

Caitlin is by far the best,

It’s DD1’s second name, and the proper pronounciation is Catleen.

It’s a name I’ve always loved.

Hopeandglory · 27/05/2025 19:04

I have a Kaitlin, never wanted her to be Cat or Lyn, to a selected few she is Katie other than that she is Kaitlin and actually admitted to liking her name and it's spelling,

Harp1977 · 27/05/2025 19:06

If you are going for a true Irish name, there is no K in the Irish alphabet,
I prefer Caitlin as well but that would be the spelling I grew up with.

ladyamy · 27/05/2025 19:07
