Caitlin, kaitlyn or katelyn?

Im due soon and still struggling on picking a girls name, I think the spelling Caitlin looks very classic and timeless but DH likes the Katelyn or Kaitlyn spelling. I'm also concerned if it would sound too dated these days no matter the spelling? I personally think the original spelling will stand the test of time but not keen on the spellings he likes, they seem very American.
Thoughts?

Another vote for Kaitlin.

Honestly, are you sure you want to choose this name OP? If you go with Kaitlin / Katelyn, people will go “Oh what a shame, it’s so much nicer as Caitlin”.

If you go with Caitlin (pronounced Katelynne), every so often the child will have people telling her she pronounces her own name wrong.

If you go with Caitlin (pronounced Cat-linn), hardly anyone else will pronounce it that way.

I've got a new baby granddaughter who's called Caitlin. To me that's the traditional and normal spelling.
If I'd had a child in my class that's the spelling I'd have used and I think would be the spelling most people would think of.
I really don't like alternative spelling of names as the child is going to have to continually explain it to people.

Caitlin, every time. Sticking a K on the front looks really naff.

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 28/05/2025 10:11

Caitlin, definitely. I'd still avoid due to it being based on a mispronunciation of an Irish name though.

Timeless? I’d say it’s quite chavvy or reminds me of Caitlyn Jenner

Pemba · 30/05/2025 06:47

Well if that is your only reference...

Caitlin is the original and best

This

I like the spelling of Caitlin best. I don’t know what it is about using a K for a C- name but I always find that jarring.

But I do pronounce it twice in my head - with a west of Ireland soft t (almost a tch ) and the American version which is also lovely.

RaraRachael · 30/05/2025 09:42

I can't think of 2 ways Caitlin could be pronounced. I'd say Kate-lynn.

There seems to be an obsession with changing C names to a K or even worse, where I live, making up a name beginning with K.
Probably trying to give their child a "unique" name.

Wafflesandstrawberries · 30/05/2025 10:31

Kathleen (or Kotchleen) is the original pronunciation of Caitlín @RaraRachael.

RaraRachael · 30/05/2025 11:23

Thanks @Wafflesandstrawberries I didn't realise that. To me Kathleen is a totally different name, mainly from my Granny's era.

Wafflesandstrawberries · 30/05/2025 11:48

Yes it’s old fashioned in Ireland now too. I know a few of both spellings (Kathleen and Caitlín) but they’re all over 50. I also know one or two younger Caitlins who pronounce it Katelyn.

Caitlín is the Irish language spelling and Kathleen is the anglicised spelling. They’re pronounced the same in some Irish dialects, others pronounce Caitlín a bit differently, but it was never Katelyn traditionally.
That was a misunderstanding of the pronunciation that started in the US I think and is relatively recent (50 years or so maybe).

Actually, should have mentioned, you’ll also find younger Kathleens among the travelling community especially. It’s popularity seems to have lasted longer there.

ThatFink · 30/05/2025 18:39

My dd is Caitlin, simple and elegant (imo).

Caitlin is the original and best

I agree

PurplePenguin28 · 01/06/2025 20:19

There’s a Caitlyn in our family which is the most sensible spelling imo but you’ve not included it.

Caitlin is an Irish name with a completely different pronunciation. When spelling it Caitlyn, the C “ai” t ensures a Kate pronunciation and not Cat and Lyn is a known alternative spelling for the name Lynn so makes it clear that it’s to be spoken that way too. The K versions are cheap imo too

Firebird83 · 01/06/2025 22:49

It seems a bit dated. I like Katelyn but as a combination of Kate + Lyn, not as a variant of Caitlin.

harrietm87 · 02/06/2025 15:52

I’d spell it Katelyn or Kate-Lyn, because there is only one possible pronunciation of that and it’s the one you want.

Caitlin pronounced katelyn is embarrassing as it reveals a complete ignorance of the name’s origin. If you’re going to adopt an anglicised pronunciation then the spelling should match.

RobertaFirmino · 02/06/2025 17:53

Oh for crying out loud, only use Caitlin if you're going to pronounce it properly. Otherwise, use one of the American spellings.
Nobody talks about Sin-ee-ad O'Connor or Mah-eev Binchy do they?

theunbreakablecleopatrajones · 02/06/2025 19:17

Caitlin

All the K versions are too Kardashian for words.

People will tell you that Kate-lin isn’t the original pronunciation of Caitlin, which is true, but the phonetic pronunciation is much prettier and is now the standard outside Ireland (and increasingly in it)

Katrin is quite a similar Germanic version.

No they don’t, but Caitlin is now mostly pronounced Kate-lin and that is that.

At least it’s pretty (prettier TBH) unlike Americans pronouncing Aisling Ace-ling

Pinty · 02/06/2025 19:22

Caitlin is the traditional way i think.
I would go for that

TheeNotoriousPIG · 02/06/2025 19:22

I don't know if it has been suggested already, but Caitlyn might be a nice compromise...

Caitlin is the nicest I think, though remember, you, dad and the teachers will be the only ones using it, your daughter will be Kate to the rest or the world

Really I know a Caitlin who is always called Caitlin
