not now...

micci25 · 20/05/2008 17:45

its v old fashioned and would be shortened to Bernie

Blu · 20/05/2008 17:45

I'd think it was sweet.

Like Bernie, too.

misdee · 20/05/2008 17:46

I'd think of Alfie's friend in the Shirley Hughes books

utterlyconfused · 20/05/2008 17:47

I'd think "He'll grow into it" and assume he'd be a Bernie.

DontCallMeBaby · 20/05/2008 17:47

Aw. Honestly, I would think aw. And then I would think of St Bernards, and Nursey from Blackadder, and that would make me smile. And then I would think of Bernard Sumner which would cause me to have True Faith stuck in my head for the rest of the day, which would be no bad thing. Oh, and I would also think of Bernard Cribbins. In Doctor Who, which would then make me think of David Tennant and cause a faraway look to come across my face ... ahem.

bossykate · 20/05/2008 17:47

if he ever goes to the US he'll be berNARD.

artichokes · 20/05/2008 17:48

I love it
DH very much does not

zippitippitoes · 20/05/2008 17:50

i ha guinea pigs called brenard and emily

they turned out to be bernadette and emil

Tatties · 20/05/2008 17:50

Oh yes Bernard Sumner, that's good

silverfrog · 20/05/2008 17:52

it's ok, I suppose (dh's name, but neither of us love it particualrly)

Bernie infinitely better (but be prepared for people to assume Barney)

and yes, in the States, it is berNARD, as pointed out previously

Nancy66 · 20/05/2008 17:54

I'd think you'd given birth to a 60 year old.

For me it's up there with: Colin, Roy and Alan.

crap turkey fillets... sooory!

expatinscotland · 20/05/2008 17:58

I would think, 'Wow, they actually named him a real name and not some made-up chavtastic gobbledigook or surname.'

PuppyDogTails · 20/05/2008 17:58

A few years ago I was sat in a ride at Alton Towers behind a scouse kid called Bernard whose brother kept calling him. Sounds quite comical with a scouse accent.

NoBiggy · 20/05/2008 17:59

I'd think he was named after his grandad.

Hulababy · 20/05/2008 18:00

It makes me think of Alfie's friend from the Shirley Hughes books.

It isn't a name I would chose personally.

ElizabethBeresford · 20/05/2008 18:01

Yes, ditto pp. I like it. My son also has a name that most people would consider dated. I don't mean Arthur. This name has not come back yet. Cudnee give a monkey's.

ElizabethBeresford · 20/05/2008 18:02

Barny is a good nn from it. More mainstream than Barnard, so you could use Barney until the masses get behind Barnard. (if you care).

BerNARD in an American accent makes me think of Lost!!

MinkyBorage · 20/05/2008 18:02

I really like it, I think it's great, I love small children with old peoples names, and I know that sounds like I'm joking, but it's lovely. My dds both have old ladies names, nd I love them.

NurkMagiggy · 20/05/2008 18:03

I'd wish I had got there first

What a sweet name!
