I keep coming back to Maria... then drifting away.. then returning again. What do you think about Maria

It’s not my favourite but there’s nothing wrong with it - it feels a bit on the dated side to me, but I’m sure that would change if I met a little Maria!

It feels a bit dated to me too which is what pushes me away. Mary's sweet, but I think of my grandma's generation and DP is not sold. Miriam sweet...just not sure it's right

It's lovely! An underused classic. A very melifluous name, as it tells you in the West Side Story song. 😊 There are at least 3 Maria songs (The Sound of Music and Blondie as well).

Plus it travels well, people from many countries are familiar with the name Maria. Yet it's never been overused in the UK.

Natsku · 21/05/2025 19:19

It's a classic and very international.

I may be biased though as that's my DD's name

Natsku · 21/05/2025 19:20

Downside is it's hard to make a nickname out of

MariaisLivingagreatlife · 21/05/2025 19:20

That's my name and you can shorten it to Ri.

pigeonstew · 21/05/2025 19:22

Funnily enough its the number one girls name worldwide! Never would've known looking at England. It's beautiful but does feel a bit dated and I don't know why that is because its also has A timeless quality ... confusing name

It is in the top 100 names, so it’s obviously used regularly for little ones - It could definitely grow on me 😊

I think it's great. Will never have a moments trouble with it in any country and there won't be 6 in her class.

MrsKateColumbo · 21/05/2025 19:26

It's lovely although I prefer Mary, it's grandma in the same way florence/ivy/etc is so I think that aspect is ok.

Yes it's dated by about 2000 years! I don't think you should worry about that aspect.

Similar in sound - Mariella, Mariah,

sheknowsitstoolate · 21/05/2025 19:26

I really don’t like it

MauraLabingi · 21/05/2025 19:28

Nice! I think the nn Marie is quite cool too.

PluckyBamboo · 21/05/2025 19:28

Makes me hum the Blondie tune 😄. Perfectly nice classic name.

suah · 21/05/2025 19:29

I love it! It’s timeless, I don’t think it’s dated at all. Lovely sound, easy to spell, international etc. It would be in my top 5 if it wasn’t for the fact that it’s super close to my MIL’s name

Why do you need a nickname?

YYYDlilah · 21/05/2025 19:30

Show me the way to Amarillo

RumbleHoney · 21/05/2025 19:32

Gorgeous name and like a PP says, very international.

Yeh. Well nigh impossible. Heard of Mia, Masha, Maia, Ria?

Bigearringsbigsmile · 21/05/2025 19:35

If you say it loud it's like music playing and if you say it soft then it's almost like praying.
What's not to like?

Polecat07 · 21/05/2025 19:37

I noticed I loved this name just the other day! So pretty and flows nicely, like someone upthread mentioned.
I don't know why I didn't appreciate it sooner, really.

GlobalCitz · 21/05/2025 20:23

Biased as it's DD's name, but it's a classic aristocratic/royal name in my country (and neighbouring ones)

It travels remarkably well and practically everyone can pronounce it and spell it, which mattered to us as we moved a lot.

GlobalCitz · 21/05/2025 20:24

PS: Mimi or Mi (mee) are cute nicknames

cramptramp · 21/05/2025 20:28

Love it. Classic and very pretty.
