Opinions on Lola?

Hey, what’s everyone’s thoughts on the name Lola - and can Lola be a nickname for any other name?

Lola was never on my radar, however I was just watching TV and there was someone named Lola on and I realised I think it’s a lovely name and added it straight to the list!

Though I can’t for the life of me think of the ‘full name’. Or, is Lola accepted as a full name?
Either way I do think it’s lovely.

It's traditionally a nickname for Dolores, but the associations of either are problematic for some people, Dolores meaning 'sorrows' and Dolores/Lola/Lolita suggesting the Nabokov novel about paedophilia (the child character's real name is Dolores Haze).

LondonLady1980 · 21/05/2025 11:25

My last cat was called Lola, as was my previous Gerbil.

It’s a beautiful name but I have always thought of it being a name for a pet as opposed to a child?

However, I do think it would be a lovely girl’s name too.

Wasn’t there a Lola in Eastenders many, many years ago?

hangingonfordearlife1 · 21/05/2025 11:28

she was a show girl

jackiesgirl · 21/05/2025 11:30

Love it! It was on our girls shortlist before we found out we were having a boy. I’ve never heard either of the above comments. It’s a lovely name.

Lins77 · 21/05/2025 11:30

I immediately think Copacabana, but that's probably an age thing 😄

Oreosareawful · 21/05/2025 11:30

Her name was Lola, she was a showgirl, with yellow feathers in her hair and a dress cut down to there.

Nope.

onwardsup4 · 21/05/2025 11:32

I think of Barry Manilow

2011j · 21/05/2025 11:33

And in her dark brown voice she said loooolaaa

2011j · 21/05/2025 11:34

It was on my list if I had a girl, but had a boy instead.

now there is one at school and I honestly cringe slightly when it's called across the playground

Lins77 · 21/05/2025 11:35

Reached its peak popularity in the UK in 2010, apparently, when it was 33rd.

ItsCalledAConversation · 21/05/2025 11:37

Not for me. Too cutesy, sexy overtones (see PP about Lolita). Would be a good name for a goldfish or a pug.

tygertygers · 21/05/2025 11:37

Barry Manilow and the Kinks will be distant memories by the time Lola comes of age so wouldn’t worry about those references. I like it!

Katiesaidthat · 21/05/2025 11:38

Lola is accepted as a name in its own right even in Spain. As mentioned it was short for Dolores in the old days.
I like it. Short and sweet.

Without those references it's just cringe

I think of the Kinks!
Great song about a transsexual and a naïve young man.
Final line 'Well I know what I am and I'm glad I'm man and so's Lola.'
Deliberate ambiguity... 😂

SemperIdem · 21/05/2025 11:40

Aside from the Barry Manilow, the Kinks and Nabakov references , it is an extremely popular dogs name.

Lola makes me think of a French bulldog. Hugo has the same effect for boys.

In fairness, the Kinks' 'Lola' came out in 1970 and 'Copacabana' came out in 1978, and both of them are still getting fairly regular airplay, sung at karaoke, covered by wedding bands etc etc. I wasn't born when the Kinks' 'Lola' came out' and I was a young child when Barry Manilow's 'Copacabana' was in the charts, but I'm familiar with and know the tune and lyrics to both. I wouldn't necessarily anticipate that they'll vanish entirely any time soon.

And Nabokov's Lolita has been creating waves since the mid-50s.

Whiteflowerscreed · 21/05/2025 11:48

Just sound a bit tarty to me

Moreteaandchocolate · 21/05/2025 12:01

I really like Lola - it’s pretty, with a modern sound but not overused. I think the cococabana references aren’t really relevant to this generation.

BeepBoopBop · 21/05/2025 12:05

My fluffy little dog is called Lola, so is a friends bichon. My sister has a Lula. Loads of dogs in France with similar names.
Just be careful if you need to call her name near a park.

RaraRachael · 21/05/2025 12:07

I know of no children called Lola but lots of pets.

EmiliaRuusuvuori · 21/05/2025 12:07

I like it, it makes me think of Lola Montez by Volbeat
