Opinions on Lola?

Hey, what’s everyone’s thoughts on the name Lola - and can Lola be a nickname for any other name?

Lola was never on my radar, however I was just watching TV and there was someone named Lola on and I realised I think it’s a lovely name and added it straight to the list!

Though I can’t for the life of me think of the ‘full name’. Or, is Lola accepted as a full name?
Either way I do think it’s lovely.

it’s not your name though. your name is louisa. nick names are chosen you don’t have to use the name lola, where as this child would have no choice

I literally put in the post asking for full name suggestions where Lola could be used as a nickname.
I actually mentioned this twice.

So yes, this child would also have a choice.

Lola is okay for a pet but has unpleasant connotations for a girl.
Dolores is awful.
Louisa is classic.

Disclaimer: I was bullied for my name in school, so I'm possibly hyper vigilant about these things.
Sara Cox's daughter is called Lola. I remember when she was born I was not long out of school, thinking there was no way a DJ didn't know The Kinks song and even if the kid wasn't out-and-out bullied for her name she'd have to put up with people spelling it at her. I've no idea how Lola Cox feels about her name.
I had loving parents but there are some names (including my own) that do make me question if parents realise that this is an early and enduring opportunity to show your child how much you love them. Please aim for the message to be100%. My parents were amazing but I think they must have thought my name would toughen me up or something. Please just give your child a name that isn't a song that has a sound pattern imprinted on people's brains. Oh, and check the initials don't spell a rude word.
As ever with these things, if you have to ask if it's a good idea, it probably isn't. If you knew it was a great name you wouldn't ask the Internet.

Snailiewhalie · 21/05/2025 14:43

It's very popular and will date.

The pet/dog shouts are nonsense. I’ve seen people on here say my baby’s name is “doggy” but there are so many dogs called human names these days you could say that about any name. The days of Rover etc are long gone, people name them like babies

Elodie?

Along similar lines, Ramona?

Will she work in club down in old soho?

CarpetKnees · 21/05/2025 16:20

I do burst into the Barry Mannilow songs when I hear Lola, and then move on to The Kinks.

But I start singing "Oliver" from the Musical of same name when I hear that, and it hasn't stopped that name from being so popular.

Though I guess Oliver was more puritanical than either Lola.

PanderBare · 21/05/2025 16:59

I know one adult Lola and many dog Lolas.

Purplecatshopaholic · 21/05/2025 17:14

I like it.

WonderingWanda · 21/05/2025 17:16

I'm sure someone has beaten me to it but it goes well with Charlie!

RedBeech · 21/05/2025 17:19

I was put off it when DH and I went to a BBQ at his colleagues and four women had had babies that year - all girls. They were called: Lola, Leela, Leila and Layla. They didn't seem to even realise the names were similar.

Also makes me think of Barry Manilo.

Raspberrymoon49 · 21/05/2025 17:20

Very popular now, I know 5

she was a show girl

This. It’s very popular now though.

Well this has been an interesting thread to read!

My name is Lola. My full name is Louisa, always been Lola for short. No one has ever mistaken me for a showgirl, transsexual or dog.

I work with another Lola, who is actually called Lois, Lola for short. It’s surprising how often I’ve met another - not often, but not rare. Obviously biased but I like my name.

I’ve met a few adult Lola’s but like you, it’s always been a nickname rather than their given name.

Dunnop · 22/05/2025 00:43

If you can go to the garden centre, and buy a dog bowl or toy with the name on, avoid using that name for a child.

heidyho · 22/05/2025 03:52

I love it! I have 4dc and havent heard of any Lolas in school/nursery so it's popularity must be location dependant!

It’s a nice name. The songs mentioned won’t be on the radar by the time she is old enough to care and in all honesty who cares anyway!!! You can talk yourself out of anything if you try hard enough…,

Nancywilsontheendofourlove · 22/05/2025 17:58

Same as pp first thing that sprung to mind was the Kinks song.

AnneMarieW · 22/05/2025 23:37

Everyone over 50 will likely be singing “she was a showgirl” in their heads as it’s such a well known lyric (The Kinks too but perhaps less of an earworm). The exception will be anyone with young kids (or who works with them) as they will probably know at least one or two - as Lola is now pretty trendy.

Personally I don’t like trendy names as they often date badly so I’d definitely go for a longer version. It’s supposed to be a diminutive for Dolores but that quite elderly Catholic/Hispanic lady to me.

So I’d choose something a bit more timeless and international like Louisa. You’d have to push the “Lola” nickname from Day 1 though to avoid the more obvious Lou/Lulu.

Or if you want something rarer and with the obvious “Low” sound then I think Cornish Lowenna is pretty, albeit a lot less international and well known. People often shorten to the first syllable anyway with names so extending that to “ Lola” as a nickname should be easy.

Hermiaxx · 23/05/2025 00:08

I love the name Lola as I once worked with one of the loveliest person ever and this was her name (shortened from Dolores - which didn’t suit her!). She was bright, smart and funny! I also like the Kinks song too!

1SillySossij · 23/05/2025 00:25

As a stand alone name it's chav with sexual overtones. It is better used as a diminutive eg of Delores, Caroline, Charlotte or any name beginning with Louise/a, Laura etc

ZiggyPlaysGuitarrr · 23/05/2025 00:31

I know a lovely 12 year old Lola. I like it.
