Hey, what’s everyone’s thoughts on the name Lola - and can Lola be a nickname for any other name?

Lola was never on my radar, however I was just watching TV and there was someone named Lola on and I realised I think it’s a lovely name and added it straight to the list!

Though I can’t for the life of me think of the ‘full name’. Or, is Lola accepted as a full name?
Either way I do think it’s lovely.

I really like it. My DC used to like the Charlie and Lola books/tv programme and I always thought it was a sweet name.

I wouldn’t use it as a nickname for something else. To me, names like Louisa are just totally seperate names and I don’t like forced nicknames. It’s a perfectly good name on its own.

I also like Lyla

SnowFrogJelly · 23/05/2025 00:39

Love it 🩷

Disclaimer: I was bullied for my name in school, so I'm possibly hyper vigilant about these things.
Sara Cox's daughter is called Lola. I remember when she was born I was not long out of school, thinking there was no way a DJ didn't know The Kinks song and even if the kid wasn't out-and-out bullied for her name she'd have to put up with people spelling it at her. I've no idea how Lola Cox feels about her name.
I had loving parents but there are some names (including my own) that do make me question if parents realise that this is an early and enduring opportunity to show your child how much you love them. Please aim for the message to be100%. My parents were amazing but I think they must have thought my name would toughen me up or something. Please just give your child a name that isn't a song that has a sound pattern imprinted on people's brains. Oh, and check the initials don't spell a rude word.
As ever with these things, if you have to ask if it's a good idea, it probably isn't. If you knew it was a great name you wouldn't ask the Internet.

She was born twenty years ago when Lola was in the top 50 baby names, reaching the top 20 a few years after that. So I doubt she had a hard time with her name.

Born in the 60's. My bf at primary school was Lola - her name was Leonora.

Lola is lovely.
I prefer it as a full name.

I love Lola but only like Dolores, and I dislike Lolita..

And LOVE Leonora idea, above.

stripeymonster · 23/05/2025 05:26

In my class there is a Lola who is best friends with Lullah - both lovely names for great girls but I'm forever mixing them up!

ChocolateGanache · 23/05/2025 06:12

I met her in a bar down in old Shoho, where you drink champagne and it tastes just like Coca-cola….

ChocolateGanache · 23/05/2025 12:16

Despite the song association I love the name OP.
You could also go Lucia nn Lula.

The Kinks had to change that line from Coca-cola to 'cherry cola' to avoid possible legal repercussions from Coca-Cola inc.
Sorry, I'll stop the nerdy Kinks derailing now.
But I do love that song, and the Kinks too. I'm a Londoner, they were a London band, and Waterloo Sunset makes me well up.

The pet/dog shouts are nonsense. I’ve seen people on here say my baby’s name is “doggy” but there are so many dogs called human names these days you could say that about any name. The days of Rover etc are long gone, people name them like babies

Yes not calling a child a name because of a dog using it would rule out so many names! Rex, Rory, Bella, Poppy, Max, Toby, Archie, Willow, Jasper, Harry and Leo are all in the top 100 UK dog names but are also popular kids names too.

PanderBare · 23/05/2025 23:18

You could also go Lucia nn Lula. Awful.

alexdgr8 · 23/05/2025 23:24

No.
Too much like Lolita.
Pick a proper name.

It’s a nice name. The songs mentioned won’t be on the radar by the time she is old enough to care and in all honesty who cares anyway!!! You can talk yourself out of anything if you try hard enough…,

don’t be ridiculous. the kinks song is already 60 years old

I thought it was cherry! But when I googled lyrics it it says coca. Thanks - good to know I’m not going mad!

Other ideas:

Lila
Lyla
Leah
Lara
Lidia
Lula
Layla

40andlovelife · 24/05/2025 06:54

I really like this name but Lola young has put me off it.

Berlinlover · 24/05/2025 06:58

It sounds like a stripper’s name to me.

DemBonesDemBones · 24/05/2025 07:18

I love it but it is always, always accompanied by the guitar riff in my head. Which isn’t a bad thing at all!

Anon501178 · 24/05/2025 23:04

I like it and if I had/ever have a 3rd girl child I think that's what I'd choose :)

theunbreakablecleopatrajones · 25/05/2025 09:39

She was a showgirl..

I think it’s fine as a nickname but too fluffy as a full name.

I know one who is Eloise as a full name, which is nicer than the traditional Delores

Fucking hell. Lullah is abysmal, why would you do that to your child?

But it does illustrate the fact that there are so many Lena/Lila/Lola/Leila names around they all blur a bit

KayEmAy · 27/05/2025 18:18

Love Lola! Sounds chic and fun to me.

Barry Manilow and the Kinks will be distant memories by the time Lola comes of age so wouldn’t worry about those references. I like it!

I doubt it will be a distant memory! It’s much too well known for that. Songs of this kind have a habit of never going away.

OP…don’t call your child Lola 🤦‍♀️
