Hey, what’s everyone’s thoughts on the name Lola - and can Lola be a nickname for any other name?

Lola was never on my radar, however I was just watching TV and there was someone named Lola on and I realised I think it’s a lovely name and added it straight to the list!

Though I can’t for the life of me think of the ‘full name’. Or, is Lola accepted as a full name?
Either way I do think it’s lovely.

Yup, all waaaaay before my time and my first thought was still "I met her in a club down in old Soho...." Wouldn't put me off though! I like the name.

CharlotteSometimes1 · 21/05/2025 12:10

Extremely popular dogs name.

tygertygers · 21/05/2025 12:16

I can’t remember the last time I heard Manilow or The Kinks on the radio or in popular culture. I Probably the 90s. Those songs will be 70 years old when a Lola born today is a teen! And she’s not going to care what us 60 year olds think of her name.

Kissedbyfire1 · 21/05/2025 12:20

Every other little girl in our village seems to be called Lola. It’s very popular!

thornbury · 21/05/2025 12:36

Will she have an older brother called Charlie? If so, don't do it! (DD loved those books!)

Readytohealnow · 21/05/2025 12:37

Nice for a pet

Thistooshallpass. · 21/05/2025 12:40

I like it - different but not wacky . I loved Charlie and Lola .

That's what I thought!

I've met or heard of quite a few girls called Lola, Lola-Rose, etc.

davidtennantstattoo · 21/05/2025 13:25

My dog is called Lola. We sing to her “her name was Lola, she was a show dog”

Quite right too. As would any sensible person.

We had a young Lola living across the road from us in our last house. She was probably seven or eight when we moved in and maybe 12 when we left in 2019, and I remember her mother saying crossly that some of her classmates were teasing her by singing 'Her name was Lola/She was a showgirl' and that she'd been upset. This would have been the later years of primary school. I don't know where they were picking it up from, but I don't think the 'showgirl' connotations have gone anywhere.

TeaAndToast8 · 21/05/2025 13:34

I’m not dumb but I don’t understand how she looks like a woman and talks like a man oh Lola Lo Lo Lo Lo Lola.
Its a song by the Kinks.

Dogaredabomb · 21/05/2025 13:37

La la la la Lola, sorry no.

I'm not the world's most physical guy, but when she squeezed me tight it nearly broke my spine

oh Lola

Lampzade · 21/05/2025 13:39

Lola sounds like a shortened version of a name . Does not bode well as a stand alone name

Fortean · 21/05/2025 13:41

I really like it, but it does make me think of The Kinks and Lolita, in that order. Both classics, so I don't think the associations will be going anywhere anytime soon, but if that doesn't bother you, why not?

paranoiaofpufflings · 21/05/2025 13:42

Well this has been an interesting thread to read!

My name is Lola. My full name is Louisa, always been Lola for short. No one has ever mistaken me for a showgirl, transsexual or dog.

I work with another Lola, who is actually called Lois, Lola for short. It’s surprising how often I’ve met another - not often, but not rare. Obviously biased but I like my name.

Zov · 21/05/2025 13:42

@Thelightblueduck I'm sorry, I just have a picture of a stripper in my head when I hear the name Lola. (Sorry.) Blush

Buxusmortus · 21/05/2025 13:44

It's a tacky, chavvy name. Along the lines of Roxanne, Chantelle etc. And even though the child herself or her parents may not know the Kinks or Manilow songs, grandparents and other family members certainly will.

Koazy · 21/05/2025 13:44

Stripper name, like Krystal to me

That's interesting! I've never heard it as a nickname (apart from the Dolores/Lolita thing).

I'm glad you like it! I feel it's been popular as a girl's name in recent years, so I'm surprised so many people think it's just a dog's name.

it’s not your name though. your name is louisa. nick names are chosen you don’t have to use the name lola, where as this child would have no choice

paranoiaofpufflings · 21/05/2025 14:01

@hangingonfordearlife1 But it is my name, in that it’s the name I use, the name I introduce myself as, the name people know me as. Yes, it’s a choice, but I do choose it. It’s a legitimate name that some people like and choose. With any name, there will be some who like it and some who don’t, some that appear in films or books or music, or that some choose for their pets. That doesn’t rule them out of use for others. If the OP likes the name she should use it.

NameChangedOfc · 21/05/2025 14:03

As some pp has already said, it is a short, affectionate nickname of (María) Dolores (Our Lady of Sorrows) in spanish.
I personally don't like to use nicknames and/or shortened versions of names as stand alone names.
