Can’t compromise on a name

Alisonherway · 15/05/2025 21:00

DH and I are expecting a baby, massive surprise as we both in our 40s and our kids are teens/adults.

DH has 2 children from previous relationships Lola and Kane

I have 3 children from my previous marriage Eleanor, Madeline and Thomas.

We don’t know what sex baby is and some names we both like aren’t usable (Isabella, Louis, Clara, Pippa).

My list is Amelie, Georgia and Francesca for girls, Edward, George and James for boys.

DH likes Freya, Nova, Alba and Lily for girls and Leon and Marcus for boys.

Does anyone have any names that we might both like as we are really struggling, all help appreciated!

Ouch, he has a very different style to you, doesn’t he?

Not much help I’m afraid, but I couldn’t trust the opinion of a man who called his child Kane…

DH and I couldn't agree so decided I would name it if it was a boy and he would name a girl. We had a boy, fortunately for me. But he was so delighted that he just went with the name and 23 years later he's still happy with my choice!

Lily and Leon are too similar to Lola.

I like Georgia and Marcus from your lists, and I much prefer your taste to his.

Congratulations!

I would consider traditional but uncommon names as I think you might have a overlap there. From how I see your styles. So something like

Killian
Otis
Dustin
Clyde
Quintin
Vaughan
Duncan
Ira

Joy
Rose.
Cadence
Erica
Zara
Talia
Fallon

I looked on top 1000 names and started after 500.

For me I am more of your dhs name inclination I am not a fan of traditional names. Dh more like you not a fan of unusual names our compromise was traditional but uncommon names

BootballJoy · 15/05/2025 22:19

I love Freya and Francesca

Flora
Thea
Rosa
Nancy
Imogen

Henry
Victor
Max
Francis
Julius
Otis

His style is a lot more 'modern trendy' rather than classic especially in the boy's names so it's harder to match. Would there be a compromise in classic full names with trendier nicknames? Etta short for Henrietta, Nico short for Nicholas sort of thing? Or maybe try Kinder app?

HouseCaptain · 15/05/2025 22:23

I like Francesca and Freya. James and Marcus.

ArtTheClownIsNotAMime · 15/05/2025 22:42

Freya seems like a good compromise between your styles. Do you not like it at all?

How come? I knew a few kanes at school.

Bechange997 · 15/05/2025 23:21

You have such different styles you’ll never agree. I would put all the names into a hat and pick one out which is child’s first name. Then whoever lost out can choose the middle name.

OVienna · 15/05/2025 23:47

What about Astrid for a girl?

Cecily
Camille

I love Arlo for a boy.

OVienna · 15/05/2025 23:49

Maud?

Alma
Nola
Vita

Leo
Fraser
Elliott

SapporoBaby · 16/05/2025 05:35

I’d go for Lily. It’s classic enough to go with your children’s names but he likes it.

SapporoBaby · 16/05/2025 05:36

Bechange997 · 15/05/2025 23:20

How come? I knew a few kanes at school.

I presume because Cain killed his brother out of jealousy. What a legacy.

Cabbagefamily · 16/05/2025 05:53

Marcus and Lily (Elizabeth) seem a good fit to me for both your styles.
Leo
Guy
Miles

Margot
Daisy (Margaret)
Caroline (Caro, Carrie)
Rosalind
Susanna (Susie, Suki)

dogcatkitten · 16/05/2025 05:57

Pick one each and decide that if it's a boy one of you gets first name and if it's a girl the other gets first name. When they get older they will have two very different names to pick from as the one they choose to use. Quite like:

Georgia Lily

Leon James

What about Ciara (pronounced key- ara) it's like Clara but different enough

Emanwenym · 16/05/2025 08:55

Ciara is Key-ra. Key-ara is Chiara. @CatsWhiskerz
